work for advanced ensembles explores three
fundamental minimalist approaches, but through
the lens of very atypical styles. Influenced by the
masterworks of Glass, Riley, and Adams, the
composer uses a limited melodic/rhythmic palette
to maximum effect, even including a rock-inspired
shout section that leads to the furious conclusion.

The building blocks for this piece come from the use of a musical
cryptogram. This approach assigns musical pitches to notes of the
alphabet, allowing the composer to spell words musically. The main
melody outlines the name of the dedicatee of this work, a high school
percussionist and an avid runner. After the initial chorale-like beginning,
a running theme is presented in a faster tempo; these two themes then
combine for a stirring end which fades off into the distance.

The title means full speed ahead and is the inspiration for this driving
6/8 musical dynamo. The title is also appropriate in that metal

Steampunk Overture—Shirley Mier.
Featuring a large percussion section, this work evokes the sound and
images of the world of steampunk, a science fiction/fantasy genre. After
the opening fanfare the music settles into a clock-like groove created
by percussion. The main theme travels through instrumental families

Swing (from "American Dances")—Robert W. Smith.
This composition based upon the American jazz and big-band tradition
that was popular in the 1930s and 1940s is actually one movement
from a larger three-movement suite, "American Dances", originally
composed for the Boston Pops Brass. Each movement of this suite

We May Rise—arr. Preston Hazzard.
This tender melody was originally a choral work entitled All Praise
to Thee with text based on a chorale written by Martin Luther and
first published in 1524. This wonderfully musical melody has been
beautifully reimagined for this outstanding work for wind band. The

and enhancing the rich harmonies and haunting melody of the original.
