BLUES & SWING medium
It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That
Swing)—Duke Ellington/arr. Ralph Ford. You
may think this very clever chart is all swing, but
it begins as Latin then alternates with a swing
feel. The tempo is bright at around 190-200
bpm with suggested solos for trumpet and tenor
sax, a few piano montunos, and a big shout
chorus leading to a huge ending closing this fine
chart appropriately. Additional wind parts and
a vibes part are included for optional expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

It's Oh, So Nice—Sammy Nestico. As recorded
on the great Basie-Straight Ahead album of 1968
by Count Basie, this swing outing features solid
section and full ensemble writing, brass buckets,
sax scoops, drum fills, and piano in the solo
role. The tempo is not taxing with the quarter
equaling 120; however, paying careful attention
to dynamics will be especially important. The
rhythm section parts are partially notated with
chords cued.

4 Knuckleball Blues—Paul Baker. This is a
medium swing "blues with a bridge" chart that plays
off the unusual nature of a knuckleball's trajectory
and flight characteristics. Lots of fun "wobbles"
and misdirection bring this hard-swinging chart
home in the melody and orchestration. Solo space
is provided for tenor sax and trumpet with plenty
of backgrounds as well. The trumpet range is to
written High C above the staff. A full-bodied shout
chorus follows the solos before returning to the
bridge and closing tag. Swings hard!

Late in the Quarter—Mike Dana. Here's a
funky, but swinging New Orleans street beat
feature for a front line feature of trumpet, tenor,
and trombone. A great groove, catchy call-and-
response and swinging ensemble sections,
reasonable brass ranges, and ample solo space,
with suggested solos included, come together to
make a unique and exciting work for developing
jazz bands. The clever ending is as if the band
has passed by and fades down the street, all the
while continuing on their funky, swinging journey!

Moanin'—Bobby Timmons/arr. Dave Mills. This
sultry blues tune by Bobby Timmons was made
famous by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and
makes a call and response swinger that should
be part of every jazz library. It includes improvised
solos for alto, tenor, trumpet or trombone. The
ensemble section features some great ensemble
writing based on famous solos from classic
recordings. Here are classic jazz lines that lay just
right for all instruments! Highly recommended!

H
Moanin'—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew Homzy.
Here's a playable yet very effective arrangement
of this signature Mingus composition. The familiar
baritone sax riff is handled by three saxes, and there
is also a substantial soli for the entire saxophone
section. Optional parts are included for flute,
clarinet and French horn. A terrific introduction to
the genius of Mingus!

l Modern Swing—Erik Sherburne. Written with
the idea to use contemporary jazz harmonies,
with no V-I cadences, but still accessible to
developing jazz artists, Modern Swing is a great
change of pace tune to add to your repertoire.
Sounding more difficult than it is, it will challenge
the band with interesting counterpoint, dissonant
harmonies and chord progressions. The open
solo section features a sample solo in the trumpet
1 part and includes chord changes in all the
parts. It's also available in a separate setting as a
flexible instrumentation small group chart, Pepper
number 10882374.

l Monday Morning Blues—Rich Woolworth.
A no-nonsense chart featuring lots of unisons and
tasty ensemble passages, this bluesy swinger is
ideal for developing groups. The trombones state
the melody over a standard 12-bar blues format,
followed by an 8-measure saxophone soli, making
this a kind of blues with a bridge. There are solo
opportunities for tenor and trumpet, as well as
some great moments for the drummer. Then the
entire band takes the chart out, with the drums
getting the final say. Impressive!

Moon River—Henry Mancini/arr. Billy Byers. As
recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their
album This Time by Basie, Billy Byers arranged a
wonderful, easy-swinging masterpiece. Cleverly, he
set this Mancini classic in 4/4 to accommodate the
Basie band's iconic style. This is a terrific big band
chart that belongs in every library right alongside
I Can't Stop Loving You, Nice 'n Easy and I Left
My Heart in San Francisco. There's space for a
trumpet solo, and the ensemble writing is quite
playable by most bands. This is oh, so nice and
highly recommended!

Moten Swing—Buster & Benny Moten/arr. Ernie
Wilkins. There have been a lot of published charts
on this great Ernie Wilkins arrangement, but this
is the original version as played and recorded by
the Count Basie Orchestra. Moten Swing is possibly
the most played piece of music by the Basie band
and has been recorded countless times, making it
a must-have for any band's library as it exemplifies
wonderful roaring ensemble passages with soft,
soft sections which will make your band sparkle.
This new Finale edition includes a transcribed
piano solo throughout, detailed rhythm section
parts which are written except during the solos, and
clearer, cleaner, more complete parts. Additionally,
there is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet
and piano.

America, the Beautiful—Samuel A. Ward/arr. Chris Sharp.
Here is the familiar America, the Beautiful reimagined as an energetic
shuffle. An a cappella sax soli chorale introduction gives way to a
driving shuffle that continues for the remainder of the chart. Harmon-
muted trumpets provide extra color in spots. The ranges and rhythmic
responsibilities are moderate, and there's written or improvised solo
space for tenor sax. This arrangement is appropriate for civic events,
patriotic celebrations or as an interesting change-up for festival/
adjudication program. This one is really nice!

Inspired by the music of Henry Mancini and the spy movies of the 1960s,
Catwalk is a cool jazz, minor swing tune featuring alto saxophone,
trumpet and guitar on the melody at first, then written or improvised
solos for alto sax and trumpet. Dynamic contrasts provide a potent
vehicle for the individual sections and the full ensemble. Not your typical

This straight-ahead, swinging blues chart is just what the doctor ordered!
With reasonable brass ranges, there's plenty of call-and-response writing

Great Minds Swing Alike—Erik Sherburne.
Jazz bands can't swing if they aren't swinging together, and Great
Minds Swing Alike is just the chart to prove it! It swings hard right
off the top with a sax soli, then a trumpet soli as the melody is passed
through the band while the rhythm section digs in with a steady groove.
The changes are simple allowing for an open solo section and the brass
ranges are modest. Also included is a big time shout chorus and a cool
ending. It's a great opener to get the crowd in the mood or a super
closer to leave them wanting more!

Warp Drive—Carl Strommen.
Here's a great, medium-fast Basie-style swing chart! It starts off with a
written piano solo and then the saxes take the theme before the rest of
the band kicks in. The solos are open for players of choice. A familiar
Basie-style ending modulates upward, creating a heightened source of
energy with a great shout chorus. Destined to be a favorite!

Welcome to the Majors—Rob Vuono, Jr.
This big league chart spotlights all the sections of the jazz ensemble with
high-energy and verve. Opening with an effective piano solo/rhythm
section soli, Welcome to the Majors features a driving, light shuffle
style that propels the sassy melody featuring hip piano fills and crisp
ensembles over a set of slightly altered blues changes. A four-bar kick
off leads to a tenor sax solo, and this solo section may be opened up
for additional players. An eight-bar trombone soli leads the way to the
incisive and biting shout chorus that builds and builds. Fresh, spirited,
and lots of fun for concerts, contests and festivals! Highly recommended!
