BALLADS very easy & easy / medium-easy
H Georgia on My Mind—Hoagy Carmichael/arr.
Michael Sweeney. This enduring standard by
Hoagy Carmichael continues to sound fresh year
after year. This easy setting hints at the great
Ray Charles' recording, with its lush harmonies
and bluesy ballad style. Short solos for trumpet,
sax and trombone can also be played as
section tuttis. Great for developing balance and
ensemble playing.

Going Home—arr. Paul Clark. Here is a beautiful
and creative adaptation of the familiar theme
from Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. This
arrangement is just what you need for that ballad
spot for any performance. Written as a trumpet
or flugelhorn solo feature, it works equally
well if you want to feature an alto saxophone
soloist. The frequently changing harmonies and
flowing counter lines keep things interesting,
and the limited ranges and easy rhythms keep
things simple. No worries here, this one is
highly recommended!
10607076 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 48.00
Harlem Nocturne—Earle Hagen/arr. Rick Stitzel.
Every aspiring jazz player is familiar with this
haunting ballad that achieved notoriety as the
theme song for television's Mike Hammer series.
While not a feature ballad, the saxophone section
takes the spotlight here while the brass adds
background figures to spice things up. Also
included is a written solo or soli for saxes. Play it
with full band or with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets,
3 trombones and rhythm section. Add more color
by including the optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets,
horn in F and tuba. This is an extremely nice ballad
for younger groups!
10052550 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 40.00
Hello—arr. Rick Stitzel. Adele's megahit ballad
adapts nicely for young players in this well-paced
arrangement by Rick Stitzel. A solo alto sax starts
things out, then the melody is passed to the
trombones, and then the full band settles into a
beautiful rock ballad. This blockbuster hit is very
effective and provides a beautiful change of pace
for any performance by aspiring jazz musicians. It's
also playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations and is highly recommended!
10617912 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 40.00
Here's That Rainy Day—Jimmy Van Heusen/arr.
Rick Stitzel. This beautiful and iconic jazz ballad
from the 1940s is a study in flowing phrases and
lush harmonies. Rick Stitzel's setting for younger
players focuses on the full ensemble along with
brief written or improvised solos for alto sax and
trumpet. Additional features include suggested
solos, chord/scale sheets in all keys, and written-
out bass lines and piano voicings. Plus, it's
playable with optional reduced or augmented
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

Imagine—John Lennon/arr. John Berry. Since
its release in 1971, John Lennon's poignant and
sensitive song remains relevant and popular today.
John Berry's arrangement for younger players is
in the style of a rock ballad with a contemporary
feel, and skillfully passes the melody from section
to section, and has a soulful appeal. Requiring no
solos, it's also playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations. Very nice, indeed!
10490301 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 40.00
l Just for You—Les Aldrich. This tender ballad
stays very playable and makes the perfect choice
for an elegant break from swing and rock charts for
younger ensembles. Additionally, it features some
great dynamic moments along with a written solo
feature that can be played by alto or baritone sax,
trumpet or trombone. Lovely!
10881468 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 50.00
H Li'l Darlin'—Neal Hefti/arr. Roy Phillippe. This
chart should be in every young band's library! Neal
Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential slow swing
ballad in the Basie style, and every jazzer should be
familiar with it. In this superb edition, the arranger
has changed the key and reorchestrated the parts
so it is playable by ensembles at any ability level,
and with reduced instrumentation as well. The
notes are easy, but there's more music here than
in many more difficult charts. If your students play
only a handful of jazz tunes in their life, this should
be one of them.
2403087 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . VE 42.00
H Misty—Erroll Garner/arr. Terry White. Perhaps one
of the most familiar jazz standards of all time, this
easy but effective chart has a laid-back swing feel.

and trumpet 1, and the lead trumpet range goes up
to written E-flat top space. It's also playable with
optional reduced or expanded instrumentations.
This chart delivers!

Moon River—Henry Mancini/arr. Rick Stitzel.
Henry Mancini's beautiful melody has a graceful,
lovely quality that makes it wonderful to play. Your
young jazz ensemble will take naturally to the 3/4
feel and rich harmonies that make this chart a real
delight to perform.
2473683 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . VE 40.00
4 On a Hill Far Away—arr. Chris Sharp. Chris
Sharp has taken this beloved hymn and presented
it here as a gentle rock ballad in 3/4. It's suitable
for both sacred and secular use, including as
a ballad selection for festival or assessment
programs. There are no solo responsibilities other
than a flugelhorn melody spot in the trumpet 2 part.
The limited ranges and rhythmic patterns make
this accessible to all but beginning ensembles.
Featuring beautiful use of the melody as it's passed
through the ensemble, it sounds more mature than
it plays. Very nice, indeed!
10910606 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . E 45.00
Over the Rainbow—Harold Arlen/arr. Paul Cook.
This is simply a beautiful number for young jazz
bands! Rich and slow, it's easy to play and sounds
delightful. Paul Cook's arrangement is great for
developing phrasing and style, and he even includes
a solo verse for the piano (written out, of course).

Perfectly capturing the mood and style of earlier
James Bond themes, Adele has worked her
magic with the hit Skyfall. John Berry's easy
version features a brief written alto sax solo, then
solid scoring for the entire ensemble with the
melody traded between the saxes and trumpets.
Playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations, this is sure to be an audience
favorite! Highly recommended!

scored where each section gets a piece of the
melody.Very highly recommended!

Ballads
Medium-Easy
3am—Paul Baker. In the tradition of Neal Hefti's
classic L'il Darlin, 3am is a warm ensemble ballad
that opens with a brief written solo for piano and
features improvised solos for muted trumpet and
tenor sax. It sounds very sophisticated, yet remains
accessible and will be an excellent programming
choice for any level band. You will also like the
great writing for the saxophones. Written solos are
provided as well. The trumpet range is to written top
space E in the staff, with flugelhorns being optional.
Highly recommended!

H After Sunset—Larry Neeck. This tasty rock ballad
will feature your budding alto saxophone or trumpet
star in the best possible way. The fully scored

to showcase the lyrical side of your jazz ensemble!
10280821 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
4 After the Rain—Larry Neeck. This powerful
rock ballad, with its blues-tinged melodic
and harmonic structure, is a great feature for
developing alto saxophone or trumpet soloists
throughout. The solo part is entirely notated with
no improvisation requirements. Additionally, it
features a big, full sound for the entire ensemble.
After the Rain is the perfect choice for that
change-of-pace moment in any program. All
this, and it's playable with optional reduced
instrumentation. Our highest recommendation!
10882814 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 50.00
H Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here
is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The
arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there
are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing
in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns
throughout, although trumpets would work just fine.
There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/
flugel. Very nice!
10162086 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 55.00
Angel Eyes—arr. Carl Strommen. Oh, yes! This
is a superb setting of the iconic jazz ballad that
features the alto sax star in your band. The alto solo
is mostly written with opportunities to improvise
around the melody, and the ensemble gets their
chance in the spotlight with some fine full-band
passages. The trumpet 1 range is to written E top
space with some optional octave-up sections if
desired. At 76 bpm, this chart will allow your alto
soloist to shine!
10513881 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 48.00
At Last—Harry Warren/arr. Dave Mills. This
beautiful ballad made famous by the great Etta
James makes a perfect change of pace for any
concert. Featuring a sultry tenor saxophone solo
sprinkled with melodic replies from other sections
and lush chords, this one really dazzles. There are
improvised solos for piano and tenor sax before
the full ensemble returns to close out this dreamy
ballad. Highly recommended!
10752061 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 65.00
A Ballad for Basie—Doug Beach. With a tip
of the hat to the great Neal Hefti, A Ballad For
Basie is exactly the type of ensemble ballad that
Count Basie was famous for. Featuring mostly
full ensemble work, this one asks for everyone to
contribute to the melody and to learn this iconic
style. A short, written trumpet solo rounds it out.
All aspiring jazz musicians will benefit from learning
this style! Highly recommended!

A great way to teach jazz style!
THE POWER
of TWO
Doug Beach & George Shutack.
Duets are a great way to learn the
many skills necessary to become
a successful musician. In jazz,
duets are especially effective
when performed or practiced with
a rhythm section. These duets
include a variety of styles, tempos
and harmonic progressions and
can all be performed with the
published rhythm section parts
or downloadable mp3 tracks. The
parts are fully interchangeable and
can be played with any combination
of two horns and rhythm section.
Practice options include: a single
player can play either duet part
while the mp3 plays the other
part; two players can play both
parts along with the recorded or
live rhythm section; and a single
player can work on improvisation
with the mp3 tracks or live rhythm
section. Additionally, a full online
performance track is available for
listening purposes. The Power of
Two is an exciting way to teach jazz
to developing jazz musicians!
