BLUES & SWING
4 Step on It (You're Drivin' Too Slow)—Mike
Carubia. With a laid-back feel and relaxed attitude,
this medium-slow swinger features a small group
on the head before the entire ensemble joins in.
There are sections that alternate between tension
and relaxation that add variety and contrast.
Additionally, there's lots of space for solos on a
blues scale. Make sure to check this one out!

There Will Never Be Another You—arr.
Mark Taylor. Here's a great chart on the familiar
Harry Warren jazz standard that features the
drummer on brushes and tasty figures from
the full ensemble. Also featured are wonderful
sectional and full ensemble passages that display
your band's ability for cohesive playing. There's
a suggested or improvised solo for trombone
supported by excellent background writing.
Here is a highly creative and tasteful chart that
exemplifies this arranger's skill. Developing
groups will find it ideal for festivals, concerts and
casual occasions. Highly recommended!

Things Ain't What They Used to Be—
Mercer Ellington/arr. Alan Baylock. Mercer
Ellington's classic blues shuffle gets the Baylock
treatment! The style is down home and the
solos are for alto, trumpet, trombone, and tenor
sax. Also included is a powerful Baylock-style
shout chorus and optional parts for expanded
instrumentations. It's a fun chart and it gets our
highest recommendation!

4 Warp Drive—Carl Strommen. Here's a great,
medium-fast Basie-style swing chart! It starts off
with a written piano solo and then the saxes take
the theme before the rest of the band kicks in. The
solos are open for players of choice. A familiar
Basie-style ending modulates upward, creating a
heightened source of energy with a great shout
chorus. Destined to be a favorite!

4 Welcome to the Majors—Rob Vuono, Jr..
This big league chart spotlights all the sections
of the jazz ensemble with high-energy and verve.
Opening with an effective piano solo/rhythm
section soli, Welcome to the Majors features
a driving, light shuffle style that propels the
sassy melody featuring hip piano fills and crisp
ensembles over a set of slightly altered blues
changes. A four-bar kick off leads to a tenor
sax solo, and this solo section may be opened
up for additional players. An eight-bar trombone
soli leads the way to the incisive and biting shout
chorus that builds and builds. Fresh, spirited, and
lots of fun for concerts, contests and festivals!
Highly recommended!

Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Erik Morales.
Wow! If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his
iconic jazz standard, he would be pleased! The
first statement stays very close to the original,
which is a good thing. The solos are for written
or improvised alto and trumpet, and the solo
backgrounds are simply wonderful. This swinger
plays well at about 176 bmp, has excellent full-
ensemble passages, a bari sax and rhythm
section break before the last chorus, an exciting
shout chorus, and great development. This chart
has it all! Our highest recommendation!

Developing the Language of Jazz—Jonathan Holford & Mike Carubia. Developing
the Language of Jazz is a unique and comprehensive warm-up method and study that will
have your jazz ensemble reading and playing stylistically more correct after a few 5 to 8
minute warm-up sessions. These simple, concise, and straight-forward studies not only help
students with the conceptual and stylistic difficulties in the jazz style, but will also help both
jazz savvy and novice jazz educators convey these concepts to their students. This insightful
set of exercises primarily uses the instructional technique of call (where the exercises are
demonstrated by the teacher or from mp3 audio examples) and response (when students play
back the example). The mp3 audio files are available as downloads from the publisher's website
for each instrument. Included are both unison and harmonized exercises. Those teachers who
have been active in the jazz idiom will relish the fact that they have a complete curriculum of
material to work with covering the six aspects of the language of jazz: Rhythm, Articulation,
Dynamics, Balance, Phrasing and Beginning Improvisation. Developing the Language of Jazz
is sold as a complete set with parts included for standard jazz band instrumentation, plus a
teacher's part.
