Welcome Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His faithful people. For the Lord takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with victory. Psalm 149:1, 4 Dear Friends: When did you first hear the call to create "a new song" for the Lord? We asked our composers this question. Their insightful answers are spotlighted throughout this booklet. Not surprisingly, many of our composers first "created new songs" while in church. For Mary McDonald and Anna Laura Page, keyboard improvisation in worship became the springboard to composition. For Jonathan Willcocks, singing the Psalms as a boy chorister at Kings College Cambridge engendered a lifelong love of setting psalm texts to music. As worship musicians, many of you are probably following childhood patterns established and nurtured by your families. Lloyd Larson traces his life's vocation as a church musician/composer to his childhood, when his entire family served in music ministry. Thomas Grassi, recalling a childhood filled with music making with his twin brother, lives each day in pursuit of the gift of a new song as an "act of worship." Special worship circumstances may prompt some of you to compose for your choirs. Craig Courtney first composed out of the need to provide English-language worship music while living in Austria. Always intrigued with writing songs and poetry, Pepper Choplin discovered through music ministry that his true gift lay in creating "music that helps the people around us express and experience their faith and worship the Lord." Throughout her life's journey, Molly Ijames has found "the truth of God through the beauty of music." Like Molly, Victor Johnson and Larry Shackley credit the guidance of teachers who channeled their gifts in the more specific direction of composing for the church. I'm certain that your stories contain elements common to these. As worship musicians, we are constantly creating new songs, whether we're improvising a children's choir accompaniment, penning some hymn descants, transposing a trumpet part, or re-writing the men's part in an anthem when our tenor doesn't show up on Sunday morning! Rejoice! God is calling us to create "a new song!"
