VE 40.00 4 Deck the Halls—arr. Paul Clark. Even the youngest jazz bands need to perform on holiday concerts and this rock version of Deck the Halls, easily recognized by all, fits the requirement perfectly. Quite playable with very little rehearsal, it includes an optional solo section over only two chords for the soloists of choice. As an option, the background parts sound great even without the soloists. Also, a suggested part is written out for a four-bar drum solo. Paul Murtha. This iconic hit from the 1970s was recorded by Blue Oyster Cult, and in pop culture associated with the famous "more cowbell" skit on Saturday Night Live. This solid arrangement for young players will be quick to learn, requires no solos, and is playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentation. E 40.00 4 Don't Let These Blues Fool You—Rob Vuono, Jr. This playful, medium-tempo swinger features a smooth, self-assured melody that glides along a cool, slightly altered blues progression at around 132 bpm. Trumpet and alto sax carry the melody at first before passing it off to the brass with the saxophones cleverly inserting punctuations. The saxes take the melody the third time around while the brass sections offer incisive interjections. An open solo section follows which features subtle backgrounds that enhance the proceedings without getting in the way. ME 50.00 4 Gather 'Round—Rob Vuono, Jr. Gather 'Round is a happy, joyous, medium-tempo gospel swinger with a sunny disposition. An animated full-ensemble introduction leads the way to the down-home melody, at first presented by trumpet and alto over a stop-time rhythm section. The entire sax section takes the melody next, while the brass offer uplifting commentary by way of stop- time chords. Plunger-muted trumpet is featured at the solo section. The solo section can be repeated as desired to feature additional solos; suggested solos are included for alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone. Some deft linear writing follows the solos, providing exciting dialog throughout the ensemble and leading to an effective pyramid that leaps into a big shout chorus. Don't miss the clever tag at the ending plagal cadence offering a place for the plunger-muted trumpet to shine above the final chord. Composed by Jose Fernandez Diaz and adapted for young players by John Berry, this familiar Cuban song is featured here as a great-sounding Latin chart. The solo section is open with straight-ahead changes or with written solos for alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone, with accessible backgrounds. Then, a bridge gives each section a chance to leap up and take their turn. It ends with a big shout chorus, and even with the modest brass ranges, it's scored so it sounds full and exciting. Including short written or improvised solos for alto sax and trumpet, it also has options for limited or expanded instrumentations.
