Above His cross they posted a sign saying, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews." Onlookers shook their heads and called out, "If You are really God's Son, then come down from the cross!" To their taunts and accusations, Jesus' response stood in sharp contrast as He said, oh, so lovingly, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." NARRATOR 2: Keeping their sorrowful vigil near the cross were Jesus' loved ones, including His mother, Mary. Despite the agony that He was suffering, He showed concern and compassion for their grief as He enjoined His beloved disciple, John, to care for His dear mother. Even to the thief hanging on a nearby cross, who had recognized Jesus' innocence, Jesus said, "Today, you will be with me in paradise." NARRATOR 1: When the noon hour came, the struggle between the forces of good and evil seemed to be at their absolute worst. It was then that the sun abandoned the sky as darkness descended upon the entire landscape and blanketed the earth. PowerPoint image #5 For Preview Only
