This swinging chart is a true shuffle in the tradition of Jerome Richardson's The Groove Merchant as performed by the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra. The tempo makes this chart accessible and is great for teaching style. The trumpet range goes up to high C and the trombone up to G flat. Trumpet and tenor sax solos are separated by a clever interlude before moving on to a shout section that will really show off the band's dynamic contrast as the energy moves between the brass and saxes. As recorded on Basie Picks the Winners, this wonderful Billy Byers chart takes the lovely standard into a whole new world. There is a bit of flute to be played by your first tenor, a trumpet and piano solo, and there is some exquisite writing creating great shout choruses and subtle voicing for the band. Mercer Ellington's classic blues shuffle gets the Baylock treatment! The style is down home and the solos are for alto, trumpet, trombone, and tenor sax. Also included is a powerful Baylock-style shout chorus and optional parts for expanded instrumentations. It's a fun chart and it gets our highest recommendation! 10513911 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52.00 H Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Erik Morales. Wow! If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his iconic jazz standard, he would be pleased! The first statement stays very close to the original, which is a good thing. The solos are for written or improvised alto and trumpet, and the solo backgrounds are simply wonderful. This swinger plays well at about 176 bmp, has excellent full- ensemble passages, a bari sax and rhythm section break before the last chorus, an exciting shout chorus, and great development. This chart has it all! Our highest recommendation! 10513905 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52.00 4 Yuriko—Billy Byers. This is a quintessential original chart for the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on Basie Land, the easy swing feel and tempo make this piece very accessible to most bands. There is a bit of flute in two saxophone parts. There are solos for tenor, trumpet, and piano. Of course there is the required masterful shout chorus that leads to a quiet, cool ending. Celebrate the big band era with these wonderful crowd-pleasers! He April in Paris—Vernon Duke/arr. Rick Stitzel. Made famous by The Count Basie Orchestra, here is a great-sounding yet playable version of this standard for developing bands. It includes feature spots for every section and optional written or improvised solos for trumpet and trombone. This accessible chart maintains an authentic sound even in this easy version. It will even sound full and complete with only 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and rhythm! Also included are optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets, horn in F and tuba. Whether you know this one as C-Jam Blues or Duke's Place, you sure will recognize all the great Ellington writing! Even the most inexperienced bands can do a fine performance on this jazz classic. The suggested solos are included in the parts for the entire section, so you can make it a soli feature if you prefer. There's a marvelous ensemble tutti section that starts softly then builds to the end. 2470818 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . VE 40.00 H Caravan—Duke Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney. Everyone will recognize this Duke Ellington classic! It was one of the featured works in the 2014 movie "Whiplash" and uses interesting textures and alternates between a Latin groove and swing. This is a very effective production number with limited technical demands for young players. 2307627 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . E 40.00 He Caravan—Duke Ellington/arr. John Wasson. Recently featured in the motion picture "Whiplash," this barnburner by outstanding arranger John Wasson is pure Latin fire from start to finish! This chart will have your students begging to practice. With the opportunity for an extended alto sax solo, this Rolls Royce of an arrangement is definitely top-notch! 2402725 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .MA 60.00 He Don't Get Around Much Anymore—Ellington & Russell/arr. Mark Taylor. One of the classic trademark tunes from the Duke Ellington library, this familiar jazz standard is solidly scored for younger players by Mark Taylor. When it comes to accessible charts in a medium swing style, this one can't be beat! Highly recommended! 10427404 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 He Flight of the Foo Birds—Neal Hefti/arr. Peter Blair. This Peter Blair chart on the Neal Hefti/Count Basie classic is a wonderful adaptation for younger jazz groups. It does its Basie thing with a light and cool swing feel, includes nice changes in texture, has brief written or ad lib solos for alto sax and trumpet 2, and an outstanding shout chorus with drum fills. Played at 156 bpm, the trumpet 1 range is up to written G on top of the staff, and optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. Great tune, great chart! 10513893 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ME 48.00 He My Funny Valentine—Richard Rodgers/arr. Mike Smukal. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart gave the jazz world this beautiful ballad, and arranger Mike Smukal sets it as a lush trumpet or flugelhorn solo feature. The entire solo is notated and can effectively be performed with no improvisation. It also features a wonderful double-time section with everything written out, easy ranges, some nice substitute chords and lush harmonies. This arrangement includes optional parts for flute, horn in F, baritone and tuba. This is an exceptional chart at an accessible level!
