Kodály Methodology
First Steps in Music: Vocal Development Kit—John
Feierabend. John Feierabend has been a leader in helping
young children develop their singing voices. Now, with The
First Steps in Music Vocal Development Kit, teachers can
use many of Dr. Feierabend's favorite tools and techniques
with students every day. Included in the kit are puppets, toys,
and instruments designed to help with two types of vocal
development activities. Pitch Exploration Activities invite
children to create sliding sounds and encourage them to
use their head voices. Echo Songs and Call and Response
Songs allow children to use their newly found head voices
to sing short melodic phrases. Whether used in conjunction
with the First Steps in Music Curriculum or independently,
the activities in this kit will help develop and maintain healthy
vocal fitness in students of all ages.

Kodaly Aspiring Recorder—Melissa Stouffer. This
updated product contains a teacher manual, student book,
and posters. End the frustration - both yours and your
students' - with this recorder method that starts with and
uses what your students already know: solfege and rhythm
syllables. Focusing on the introduction of the fingering
instead of the note name helps students understand by
using a known concept instead of the idea of note names,
which can be very abstract for some students. As solfege
and rhythmic concepts are introduced, students use the
recorders to apply those concepts by practicing those
elements through songs. Other musical elements such
as repeats, anacrusis, ties, rounds, and time signature
changes have also been included; however, many of
these do not happen until later when the children are
more comfortable with the mechanics. In addition to using
relatable concepts, this system also relies on widely known
folk songs. This helps those kids who just need to hear it to
play it as a beginner. Since the students have already sung
the songs in class, practice at home is easier as students
already know how the song is supposed to sound.
