A Dream Within a Dream—Ruth Morris Gray.
"Is all that we see or seem but a dream within
a dream?" There are many beautiful moments in
this lush setting of a poem by Edgar Allan Poe.
Expressive and substantive writing, this is a
work that better mixed or treble choirs will find
rewarding.

Exsultate! Jubilate!—Kyle Pederson. This
unique setting pairs the iconic Latin text with
a new, original English text which responds
to the question: Why do we rejoice and shout
our praises to God? The music captures the
energy, rhythm, and exuberance inherent in the
phrases "exsultate Deo" and "jubilate Deo," but
also reflects the quiet joys found in gratitude
for the daily gifts of breath and light. The piano
accompaniment is rhythmic and lively.

t Gloria—Ondi Yohan Tambunan. With the
traditional Latin lyrics "gloria in excelsis Deo," this
arrangement is anything but traditional. Including
some chant as well as stomping and clapping
throughout, this almost has the feel of a Haka,
and the setting embodies the joy of its lyrics.

Holding Our Breath—Carlos Cordero. Winner
of the 2020 Genesis Prize from ACDA, this is a
piece about facing the fear to breathe, and the
courage to be together once more. With text
and music knitted together in a soundscape of
layers and textures, this is a wonderful response
to the year of virtual and distanced music
making. Including aleatoric, whispered, and
shouted text, breathing, and dissonances, this
selection is an outstanding example of modern
compositional techniques.

Dt How Can I Keep from Singing?—Robert
Lowry/arr. Sarah Quartel. This is a lively
reimagining of the 19th-century American
folk hymn that opens with a solo verse then
proceeds with a soaring top melody supported
by the rhythmic vocal accompaniment of
the lower voices, with occasional alternation
between 4/4 and 7/8 meter. Together, these
elements capture both the gentle hope and the
profound joy of the text.
