snowy landscape to describe the perseverance of
the human heart as the body ages, speaking to the
resilience of humanity in the face of adversity. The
setting is flowing, with dissonances blossoming
into utterly beautiful harmonic moments.

t Auld Lang Syne—arr. Desmond Earley. For
nearly a century, the passage from the old to
the new year at midnight has been celebrated
by singing Robert Burns' poem. In this graceful
arrangement, we hear the standard English
version of the text set to a traditional Scottish
melody. Sopranos and altos predominate the
four verses, sometimes in unison, and at times
underpinned by a Scottish drone. In contrast,
the chorus is richly sung by the full complement
of voices.

A Cat, a Bird, and Winter Fur—James Adler.
This a cappella work features two short pieces:
In Winter and I Heard a Bird Sing. A challenging
soprano solo appears halfway through the first
selection, supported by the choir and a rollicking
accompaniment that leads to the second second
piece, which begins slowly but quickly picks up
where the first left off.

A Cradle Song—Patrick Hawes. With text
from William Blake's Songs of Innocence, this
original lullaby setting has a gently rocking piano
accompaniment that creates a sense of serenity.
The soprano solo speaks of a mother's love as
she looks down on her sleeping infant while
the choral harmonies warmly surround without
intruding into the tender moment. This will make
a lovely choice for Christmas as a Nativity carol,
or at any time of year.

Haneirot Halalu—Stanley M. Hoffman. This
setting in Hebrew of the most famous traditional
Chanukah text is based on an original melody,
and is not an arrangement of a pre-existing
one. The piece begins with a boisterous melody
and contrapuntal writing in shifting meters. The
middle section features slower, more staid,
choral-like music, dominated by a tenor solo. The
closing sections recalls the music of the opening.

movement cycle for choir and piano. Depicted
in four movements that total about nine minutes,
the thematic material continues throughout

Magnificat—Stephen Chatman. This 24-minute
work in eight movements was commissioned
by the Vancouver Chamber Choir. Following
the ancient tradition, the text of this canticle is
taken directly from the Gospel of Luke (1:46-
55). Fragments of the text, often overlapped,
repeated, and juxtaposed, are set in Latin plus
the six official languages of the Vancouver
2010 Winter Olympics: English, French,
Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and German. The
omnipresent and spiritually symbolic element of
stepwise ascending melodic lines helps to unify
the eclectic panoply of traditional, multicultural,
and contemporary musical styles. Through its
marriage of multilingual text and contrasting
musical idioms, the work expresses not only
strongly held religious convictions but also hope
for universal peace and harmony within our
global community.

t Nu'oli—Robert Lowry/arr. Jace Kaholokula
Saplan. Originally known as Glad Tidings, this
hymn was translated by Makua Laiana, an early
missionary who arrived in 1831 and spent the
remainder of his life amongst the Hawaiian people.
According to Native scholars, this passage was
chosen to be sung at the first public worship of
a Congregationalist church in Hawaii on April
23, 1820 and is a setting of the Nativity text from
Luke 2. This lovely a cappella arrangement of the
traditional hymn is a fitting tribute to the original.
