Scene 5 Scene 5 Sign bearer walks across stage with sign displaying date to audience: December 24 (Cue "Minor Jingle", lights up—Kids are seated, scattered through the mess, looking depressed. Taylor is staring at her phone, Alex is moping around, Gabbi is absent-mindedly tracing one of the paintings on the wall, and Marcus is laying on the floor blankly looking up at the ceiling. Parents enter from another room looking worn out and disheveled.) MOM: Hey kids, we need to have a little family meeting. ALEX: Uh, oh. That's not usually a good thing. DAD: Oh don't be silly. Everyone gather 'round. (Parents sit in chairs and Kids sit on the floor in a circle with them) MOM: You all know that things have been extra challenging with the house this year. Your dad and I are so thankful that you have helped in so many ways. DAD: Thank you for being patient and understanding about our situation. We need to ask you to be understanding about one more thing. MOM: Because of the house, our finances are stretched very thin with the unexpected costs and we haven't been able to afford some things that we usually do. GABBI: Like what? DAD: Well… Christmas presents. ALEX: (freaking out) What do you mean?! DAD: We barely have enough money to pay the bills and keep food on the table. We just need to get through the rest of these house repairs and then things can go back to normal. GABBI: (wailing) But it's Christmas Eve! MOM: I'm sorry sweetie. I know it's unexpected, but at least we can all be together and celebrate our love for Jesus and each other. (Gabbi begins to cry, Alex folds both arms across his chest and goes to sulk in the corner, Marcus looks defeated, and Taylor looks sad.) "Unexpected" (Mom, Kids, and Choir sing and perform blocking/choreography, segue to Scene 6)
