The Great Flood (A Noah Sound Story) Teaching Tips by Susan Eernisse A Story Worth Telling Recount the story of Noah using a child-friendly version of Genesis 6:9-8:22. If you choose to summarize it, be sure to show the children where it is found in a Bible. The story is about Noah's obedience and God's faithfulness – God keeps God's promises. God still keeps promises today as we, like Noah, learn to trust and obey God. Rhythmic Speech The Great Flood is a musical version of the story that is spoken, not sung. To get ready for speaking as an ensemble, practice speaking distinctly as a group using tongue twisters and rhymes – using various styles of speaking: higher, lower, softer, louder, older, younger, etc. It's fun to even try different accents like Southern (US), British, etc. There are individual solo parts, but all the children get to speak in the places designated for ALL, and in small groups (Crews) throughout the story. Isolate the lines spoken by ALL and practice speaking together while keeping a steady beat on a drum or with body percussion. Teach the expression you desire as you introduce each line – soft, loud, excited, etc. The recording is a great resource to help with this process. Layers of Sound (The Construction and the Storm) The construction and storm sounds in this story enter in layers, which creates a dynamic and interesting effect. As each new layer (group) is added, the other groups should lower their volume to allow the new layer to be more prominent. Remind children that the groups are not in competition with each other, but are to work together in the best way to tell the story. Allow the Storm Crew to create movements or actions to enhance their part of the storm. Performance Options This spoken-word experience has many options for groups of all sizes. The Narrator lines can be split between multiple speakers. The Crews can include as many children as you'd like - and children can play on multiple crews if you have a smaller ensemble. If needed or desired, the Narrator(s) can double the spoken Crew lines. Percussion instrument suggestions are provided in the score; however, you can certainly utilize whatever instruments are available to you - including "found percussion" - common items in a pantry or garage that can be used to make a percussive sound (wooden spoons, trash cans, cookie sheets, boxes of macaroni, etc.).
