An original setting of the beloved traditional Christmas text, this arrangement is lyrical and lovely. Meter changes, modal touches, and divisi add to the richness of the piece, but it is not difficult to learn. A solo along and short a cappella sections add contrasting textures. 11394216 SATB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.10 Joy to the World—arr. Dan Forrest. You haven't heard Joy to the World like this before! This Irish traditional music experience pairs the well-known carol with a newly composed Irish slide, and the result is an explosion of joy that you simply must hear to believe! With piano four hands, optional traditional Irish ensemble, and/or full orchestra. 11395408 SATB divisi, 4-hand piano . . . 2.50 Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis—Linda Kachelmeier. This atmospheric setting for treble voices of the traditional Song of Mary and Song of Simeon texts is unaccompanied with a meterless feel. Set with English lyrics, both movements shimmer with assertive dissonances and soaring text painting. 11412631 SSA or SSAA . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.75 Magnificat anima mea (from Magni- ficat)—Taylor Scott Davis. This energetic opening movement of a larger setting of the Magnificat certainly stands on its own. Brilliant choral writing can be accompanied by full orchestra, chamber orchestra, or organ and harp (piano) with optional percussion. Divisi writing creates rich sonorities, and careful Latin text declamation is achieved through meter changes and lively rhythmic interplay. An exciting and highly recommended work. 11394796 SATB divisi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.15 My Heart Shall Sing—Karen Marrolli. A unique combination of an old Irish Reel combined with the tune "Star of the County Down." The setting begins with an Irish folk-like violin solo, followed by accessible choral writing. 11394799 Two-Part opt. SATB . . . . . . . . 3.20 Night of Wonder—Karen Black. A moving text by Paul Hoffman is the inspiration for this quiet, lovely original Christmas anthem. The lyric flow of each stanza slows to its cadential point to ponder and appreciate Beauty, Hope, Love, Faith, and Grace. The choral texture is nicely varied by stanza, including some divisi. The supportive piano accompaniment and occasional a cappella moments serve to underscore the quiet. A lovely seasonal selection for worship or concert. 11394801 SATB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.25 O Little Town of Bethlehem—arr. Dan Forrest. This is a beautiful selection for any winter concert. 11392404 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.65 Opening—Bob Chilcott. An upbeat setting of words by Charles Bennett celebrating the arrival of spring, this selection features changing meters, a compelling verse-refrain structure, and catchy melodies. A darker middle section mirrors the text's reflection on winter's snow and silence before the music opens out into a final, joyful statement of the verse and refrain as the first signs of spring appear. 11415043 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.65 Ring Out, Wild Bells—Aidan Vass. English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson described the custom of bell ringing to ring out the old year and ring in the new in this 1850 poem. In this exciting original composition, the ringing bells along with the hopeful emotions of the new year are captured in the piano accompaniment and the divisi vocal writing. 11413271 SATB divisi, or SSAATTBB . . 2.60 The Rose That Bare Jesu—Duncan Tuomi. With effective use of mixed meters that alternate in feel between the English and Latin texts, this piece incorporates a wide range of dynamic expression and a divisi texture that adds warmth. 11394761 SATB divisi. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.25 Sing We Now of Christmas—arr. Kyle Pederson. This ethereal setting of NOEL NOUVELET will surprise you with its mystical take on what is normally a boisterous Christmas song. Sara Teasdale's lyric poem looks to the stars for serenity and promise, and this handsome setting is superbly crafted by noted composer Frank Ticheli. Tasteful harmonic suspensions and rich choral textures bring this work to life with a delicate beauty that perfectly expresses the spirit of the poem. A superior choice for concert appearances with more capable choirs. 11396217 TTBB divisi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.35 We Grow Accustomed to the Dark—Linda Kachelmeier. Emily Dickinson's poem is set with unaccompanied harmonies that speak to the darkly mysterious quality portrayed in the text. Useful at any time of year, but especially effective for the winter solstice or Advent, or anytime we deal with darkness in our lives. 11412633 SSAA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.25 The Wexford Carol—arr. Desmond Earley. This native Irish piece dates back to the 12th century. Its short verses focus on the scenes surrounding the birth of the Messiah heralded by the prophets as a gift from God "to end all strife." The traditional Irish melody shines forth in this atmospheric setting scored for solo tenor, choir, strings, and continuo. Its beguiling beauty is simply expressed throughout by the solo tenor, but for the evocation of the apparition of the angel to the shepherds, the choir weaves its lines in a free rendition. 11394235 SATB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.75 What Child Is This?—arr. Scott Shattuck. Strains of Schubert's Ave Maria are present in this cleverly arranged version of the traditional English carol. Featuring a trio of soloists, a Latin text and an English text combine and layer to create a truly ancient-modern a cappella experience. The SSAA is the signature arrangement of Brigham Young University's a cappella group Noteworthy, and the SATB is an adaptation. 11397169 SATB divisi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.95 11397170 SSAA divisi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.95 A Winter Breviary—Reena Esmail. A unique selection, this work includes three pieces: We Look for You; The Year's Midnight and The Unexpected Early Hour, each based on an Indian classical raag or raga: Hamsadhwani, Malkauns, and Ahir Bhairav, respectively. The texts are linked to the Christian services of Evensong, Matins, and Lauds, and they reflect upon the Christmas story from the perspective of different times of day: evening, midnight, and daybreak. The first two pieces have a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the third, which uses an energetic compound time signature and bell-like melodic shapes. 11392409 SATB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4.00 Winter, Snow—Carol Barnett.
