from the Cherokee Indian word "Oologah"
and is inspired by Native American musical
influences as well as the imagery of a
powerful and dramatic storm that appears
suddenly, sweeping viciously across the
Midwestern plains. At first brooding on the
horizon and later exploding with intensity,
Dark Cloud represents the challenges and
strife of a people battling the fierce and
unpredictable elements in a time before
technology.

Fantasia on a Theme from
The Southern Harmony

Warm, emotional and harmonically rich,
the lovely tune Ballerma comes from the
shaped note book of hymns entitled The
Southern Harmony and is similar to the well
known hymn Amazing Grace. It's the perfect
subject for the collection of colorful and
creative fantasies that make up this work.
After an initial presentation, the melody is
used in a series of contrasting treatments,
the first being flippant and humorous.
The next is simple and childlike featuring
a delicate percussion ensemble, clarinet
ensemble or combination of both. The
final fantasy incessantly drives the music
forward, releasing pent-up energy along the
way to the thrilling conclusion.

A Festive Holiday Greeting

to conclude concerts in a fun and light-
hearted manner. While it sounds impressive
and quite demanding, appropriate ranges
and wise orchestration makes it quite
playable at faster tempos. As with most
of Gilroy's compositions, the percussion
section plays an important role as indicated
by a galloping rhythm first introduced by
a solo woodblock. This fun and energetic
work will provide a musical exclamation
point to any wind band performance.

moto perpetuo style, the intensity begins in
the first measure and doesn't let up until the
final measure is finished. Driving, frenetic
ostinati alternate with heroic fanfares
throughout, pulsating with seemingly
unlimited and unyielding drive.

exuberant. A bold rhythmic opening
statement from the ensemble introduces

conclusion.
