(Opening the envelope, KYLE takes out a large, folded paper. A light comes up on CAITLIN. Her voices overlaps with KYLE's, then she eventually speaks by herself.) (Dear Uncle Kyle…) CAITLIN: (Dear Uncle Kyle…) (KYLE laughs.) PVT. JENSEN: What does it say? KYLE: Only one word. (KYLE opens the folded paper, showing it to PVT. JENSEN.) CAITLIN: (shouting) JOY! PVT. JENSEN: That's a good word, sir. KYLE: It certainly is. (pulling out a haphazardly-constructed paper star) And what have we here? (reading a note on a star) CAITLIN: And a star. Just for you. Love, Caitlin! (CAITLIN's light goes off or she exits.) KYLE: (looking at the star, smiling) Looks like I've found one star this Christmas Eve. PVT. JENSEN: Pity that can't find a home on top of a tree. Well, good night, Lieutenant. (PVT. JENSEN starts to exit. KYLE suddenly stops him.) KYLE: Private, wait. Isn't there a tree in the mess hall? PVT. JENSEN: Uh, yes… KYLE: And I understand it's pretty bare. Do you think this (extending Caitlin's star) might be a welcome addition? PVT. JENSEN: That it would. KYLE: Well, it's almost 2100 hours, Private. We better get over to that lit- tle celebration on the double. PVT. JENSEN: (surprised, but very pleased) Yes sir. Glad you've changed your mind about singing. KYLE: Singing?! You might even get a little preaching from me tonight. The Christmas story doesn't end at the manger, you know. C'mon.
