Among the many arrangements that have been frequently requested by singers and enthusiasts, the music written for Frank Sinatra and the Count Basie Orchestra is high on the list. This original version was arranged by Billy May and later adapted by Quincy Jones. The primary difference is that the Jones version eliminated the string parts. Beginning with the verse slowly and freely stated, it blasts into a swing style at around 200 bpm. The only instrumental solo is alto saxophone filling behind the vocalist in the first chorus. There are no individual solos, but plenty of superb ensemble work and the usual, excellent band chorus in the middle. The vocal ranges are: low key, G below middle C to third line Bb and, high key: middle C to fourth space Eb. This just may be the ultimate jazz ballad, done here in another great Wolpe arrangement! Here is the brilliant title track from Frank Sinatra's 1960 Capitol album. Arranged by Nelson Riddle, this publication has been prepared from the original set of parts and is not a transcription. Featuring all the signature Riddle techniques, this chart swings from the start. The instrumentation calls for a full big band with harp and string section. Included in this publication is an optional synthesizer part that may be used in place of the strings.
