Allen Gray has created a nice swing chart for developing jazz bands on this familiar and fun doo-wop tune from the past. After the opening melody there are effective ensemble passages and a solo section for soloists as desired for alto and tenor saxes, trumpet or trombone. After the solos the ensemble really starts to swing with a modulation that builds and builds to a cool finale. The saxes take the lead in this upbeat, bluesy and swinging shuffle chart set at 144 bpm. Great riffs, reasonable ranges and solid ensemble scoring make this an accessible yet fun chart for your band to rehearse and perform. An optional solo section includes written solos, and the chart sounds exceptional even played with optional limited instrumentation. Ending with a shout chorus that begins with a whisper and ends with a roar, Make It Snappy deserves that special place in any performance! This arrangement of a Stanley Turrentine signature tune is not difficult at all, but it sounds very sophisticated! The swingin' melody is initially handled by tenor 1 and trombone 1 and the tempo is around 140 bpm. There are written or improvised solos for alto, tenor, trumpet, and trombone, great dynamic contrasts and a nice shout chorus that begins softly and builds. This is a chart that is solid throughout and makes excellent use of the full ensemble. Optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. Highly recommended! 10513877 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 n Mr. GK (A Tribute to Gene Krupa)Mike Carubia. Drum features have always been a big crowd pleaser in the jazz idiom. This outstanding tribute to the original big band drum star, Gene Krupa, features a short, written trumpet solo with plunger, but this exceptional chart is primarily a drum feature with solid big band ensemble sections to drive it along. Full of audience appeal, it's a big band extravaganza set in the style of the famous Krupa swing tunes of yesteryear. The definitive recording of this jazz classic is by Bill Evans, with other notable recordings by Cannonball Adderley and Joe Henderson. Paul Murtha's arrangement for developing groups features a Latin style on the head then switches to swing on the bridge. This really nice chart also includes very effective writing for all sections of the band as well as written or improvised solo space for alto sax. Highly recommended! 10072801 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 A Nasty Bit of BluesDoug Beach. You'll feel nasty but sound great on this cookin' blues number! A straight ahead swing tempo drives some really great licks, including a really hot unison band line that sounds much harder than it really is. A big shout chorus and a short drum solo at the end round things out, and there's an open solo section with room for any of your players to stretch out. Also includes a separate solo sheet for guidance. 2425007 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 52.00 New York State of MindBilly Joel/arr. John Berry. First recorded by Billy Joel in 1976, this timeless classic was never a hit on the charts, but over the years has become a fan favorite and boasts countless covers from a diverse range of artists including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, The Muppets, and the cast of Glee. Originally recorded in 1975 by Count Basie and titled because Basie loved orange sherbert, this fresh setting features easy registers, strong jazz figures, and a bright, free swinging style. A written or ad lib trumpet solo in the midsection and an ensemble shout before the final chord are highlights. Here's a perfect touch of swing era nostalgia with this signature tune from the Glenn Miller Orchestra. All the elements of the original are here in this more accessible version including the famous sax melody, written trumpet and alto solos and, of course, full band vocals. Written in the style of the great Count Basie, and named after his home town of Red Bank, New Jersey, this chart swings like crazy! The Count would be pleased to know that this swingin' chart was styled after his band! Highly recommended! 2700863 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 52.00 n Robbin's Nestarr. Rick Stitzel. Carefully utilizing every section of the ensemble, here is a skillfully arranged setting of this jazz favorite recorded most notably by Illinois Jacquet and also Count Basie. Featuring a medium swing style and phrases traded between sections, this is a very attainable swing chart for developing players. Short solos are included for tenor sax, trumpet and trombone, along with a chorus for the full ensemble. Written solos are included along with scale/chord sheets in all keys, and the bass lines and piano voices are written out. You don't want to miss this great chart on a great jazz standard! This great tune by Cannonball Adderley combines a soulful, straight-eighth groove with a swing feel at a tempo anywhere from 138 to 160 beats per minute. Arranger Mike Kamuf delivers another great chart that is super-fun to play, easy to rehearse and very effective. Features include written or ad lib solos for alto 1 and trumpet 2, lead trumpet range to written G, well notated rhythm section parts, and a killer shout chorus. It's a terrific chart! This very playable rendition of the early blues classic opens with a sultry trumpet solo and then breaks into a medium tempo shuffle with a call and response section between the solo trumpet and ensemble. Also featured are a nice sax section soli, an open solo section on everybody's favorite Bb blues changes, and a break strain. Playing jazz should be fun and this carefully constructed arrangement for younger players will certainly add the "fun" element! Feature your saxes as well as your full jazz band with this medium-tempo blues in F that really swings! With lots of ensemble writing that sounds big but stays playable, this chart can be performed by almost any developing ensemble. The solo section features a first solo that is written or improvised by trumpet followed by a wonderful ensemble interlude featuring the saxophone section, then a second solo by trombone before more outstanding ensemble work that leads to the satisfying finish. Victor Lopez. Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and love, made famous by Gene Krupa and the Benny Goodman Orchestra, only arranged for young players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that can be opened up for as much excitement as the crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will also sound full with reduced instrumentation or with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a showstopper! Then this cookin' blues shuffle chart is just what you need! The guitar helper part includes both a written solo and a tablature version of the same solo. There's also an optional open solo section that can be opened up for as many players as desired. Solid background figures by the ensemble give this a great big sound that will make your budding B.B. Originally an instrumental composition by Henry Mancini, this engaging tune has been used in various film scores, and later recorded by artists such as Sarah Vaughn and Sergio Mendes. Here's a smooth version that features the entire ensemble. 10617902 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 4 So What (Little Big Band)Miles Davis/arr. Michael Philip Mossman. Here is the Miles Davis jazz standard skillfully and uniquely arranged for six horns and rhythm section. On the head, the saxes take the signature melody line answered by the brass. The open solo section features tasty background figures, followed by a tutti ensemble section before returning to the head. Instrumentation: six horns (ATB saxes, two trumpets, one trombone) plus four rhythm with optional additional parts for alto, tenor and trombone. One of the most enduring compositions from Miles Davis' early career is this medium swing tune recorded on the 1954 album Walkin'. Rick Stitzel uses some nifty phrase extensions in the beginning, then alternates the full ensemble with statements by a small group in this terrific chart for younger players. Although this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands, this arrangement works so well it can appropriately be included in any jazz concert. It's also invaluable to have in the files for those "emergency" situations where a jazz group is called upon to perform our National Anthem. It includes just the right elements to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and reverence of the original. While it is harmonically jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can serve as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also playable with reduced instrumentation.
