Latin medium-advanced & advanced / Jazz/Rock & Funk very easy
n Not Your Momma's SambaPaul Baker. This
bright Latin/samba chart features the full ensemble
getting off to a high-energy start, then the alto sax
and trumpet take over to present the melody. The
trombone section jumps in for the bridge before the
trumpets make their majestic return to finish out the
form. A 16-bar montuna builds in layers to send off
the alto sax soloist, followed by a trombone soloist
leading into the entire trombone section trading
fours with the drummer. The trumpets join in for
two more passages before the saxes take over with
a hot section soli. The trumpets return with the final
statement of the melody and lead to the big finish. It's
an exciting chart for festivals or any performance!

H Punta Del SoulDave Grusin/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. Tasty and groovy with a funky Latin
groove, this tune was composed by Dave Grusin
and arranged by Gordon to feature Dave and
guitarist Lee Ritenour on the Big Phat Band CD, Act
Your Age. If you have a piano player to showcase
and a tasty guitar player, this is a wonderful chart.
Not technically difficult, but dynamics and colors
are a key aspect of this arrangement. Doubles
include an optional flute on 2nd alto and optional
bass clarinet on bari sax, but sax parts are provided.
As recorded by the Big Phat Band.

There's a lot of energy lurking in this samba chart
played at about 170 bpm. There are written solos
provided for all saxes and brass, a great sax soli,
a developing interlude, and a lead trumpet range
to written B above the staff. Includes optional
vibraphone and flute parts. A great chart on this
Joe Henderson classic!

H Recorda meJoe Henderson/arr. Eric Richards.
Here's a show-stopping Latin chart! Tenor sax
legend Joe Henderson wrote this jazz classic and
Eric Richards arranged it to soar! This is Latin/
jazz at its best with excitement from the first note
with sax solis, a melody line by tenor and trumpet,
solo space for tenor, trumpet and trombone, lead
trumpet range to written high D, and a few drum
solos. Great tune, wonderful chart!

4 Salt City SambaAndrew Neu. Salt City Samba
is an American/Brazilian samba that is perfect for
advancing groups. Similar in style to American/Latin
jazz artists Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyro, this
samba original also channels the infectious music
of Brazil with the half-note equaling 108 bpm. An
open solo section, written or ad lib, is followed by
a very interesting call and response section, and
then a driving shout chorus making this an exciting
closer for any program. The alto 1 part doubles on
soprano sax, however an optional alto 1 only part is
provided. Highly recommended!

4 Samba de OrpheeLuiz Bonfa/arr. Kris Berg.
This arrangement of the classic Luiz Bonfa samba
is played at around 208 bpm. It's bright, happy,
upbeat, and festive throughout, with the initial
melody stated by alto 1 and trumpet 2 with solo
chord changes for each. The groove switches
to swing midway, then back to the samba feel.
A superb chart top to bottom on a great tune!

n Vierd Blues (aka Trane's Blues)Miles
Davis/arr. Michael Philip Mossman. Recorded
in the mid-1950s and also known as Trane's
Blues, this jazz classic is credited to Miles Davis
but reportedly was penned by John Coltrane.
Regardless, Michael Mossman's refreshing
version crafted in a moderate cha-cha groove
puts this standard tune in a completely new
light. The solo section can be handled by any
saxophone. Suggested solos, chord/scale sheets
in all keys, written bass lines and piano voicings
are all included.

Winds Out of the EastMichael Philip Mossman.
Written in a dynamic and fast mambo style,
the sax section does most of the heavy lifting
in this original by Michael Mossman, supported
by punches and answers in the brass. With
stunning harmonic treatments and effective
pacing throughout, there is an open solo section
for any player. A sizzling production number for
mature bands!

THE POWER
OF TWO
Doug Beach & George Shutack.
Duets are a great way to learn the
many skills necessary to become
a successful musician. In jazz,
duets are especially effective
when performed or practiced with
a rhythm section. These duets
include a variety of styles, tempos
and harmonic progressions and
can all be performed with the
published rhythm section parts
or downloadable mp3 tracks. The
parts are fully interchangeable and
can be played with any combination
of two horns and rhythm section.
Practice options include: a single
player can play either duet part
while the mp3 plays the other
part; two players can play both
parts along with the recorded or
live rhythm section; and a single
player can work on improvisation
with the mp3 tracks or live rhythm
section. Additionally, a full online
performance track is available for
listening purposes. The Power of
Two is an exciting way to teach jazz
to developing jazz musicians!
