There is a written or improvised solo for any trumpet or alto saxophone, and the shout chorus features a dialogue between the ensemble and drums. Neal Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential slow swing ballad in the Basie style, and every jazzer should be familiar with it. In this superb edition, the arranger has changed the key and reorchestrated the parts so it is playable by ensembles at any ability level, and with reduced instrumentation as well. The notes are easy, but there's more music here than in many more difficult charts. This is one of the true jazz classics from composer/ innovator/performer Miles Davis. The easy chords and modal style make it a natural for learning to improvise and the cool, swing format is a must for learning the style. Based on the blues in F and featuring a catchy riff traded around the ensemble, here is the perfect swing chart for beginning jazzers!
