Paul Murtha. This 1975 tune by the Temptations is one of their later hits and is described as "funkadelic" in style. This chart features the infectious bass line first stated by baritone sax and guitar, and later joined by the rest of the ensemble playing the funky riffs. The solo section on a one-chord vamp can easily be opened up, but samples are provided for alto sax, trumpet and trombone. You will love the way the ensemble layers in near the ending. Perhaps one of the Beatles' lesser known tunes, Blackbird remains one of their most creative and memorable. Mike Tomaro's smooth setting uses a blend of light funk along with a brief samba section to create a truly outstanding effect. Although this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands, this arrangement works so well it can appropriately be included in any jazz concert. It's also invaluable to have in the files for those "emergency" situations where a jazz group is called upon to perform our National Anthem. It includes just the right elements to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and reverence of the original. While it is harmonically jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can serve as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also playable with reduced instrumentation.
