Beginning or "First Performance" level works have these characteristics: almost entirely pieces in the key of D, occasionally G; most pieces use only the first 5 or 6 notes learned; no dotted rhythms except for very familiar pieces like Amazing Grace or Ode to Joy; "Low 2" (C naturals/F naturals) avoided in violins and violas (pieces selected in the key of G will be pentatonic); no extensions for cello; the music corresponds with the first half of any of the major string methods; lots of unison playing.
