The introduction features bells and piano antiphonally, bringing a lovely depth to the work. Optional handchimes introduce the hymn melody with quiet accompaniment for contrast. The second verse has more motion with the hymn melody in octaves. The antiphonal theme returns and leads into Amazing Grace with chimes on the melody accompanied by malleted suspended handbells. The key may be minor, but this tune is joyful! The composer conveys this joy as well as energy through the use of the clarinet and bass. A slower middle section brings a change of pace, and the use of optional handchimes sets an even more mellow tone. The final stanza returns to the original upbeat feel for a delightful finale.
