TEACHING IDEAS for: Jesus, Gift of Love Use your feet to feel the triple meter of this song • Say, "Remove the shoe on your left foot and place under your chair." • As the children listen to the song, say, "Step with your left (sock) foot on beats 2 & 3." • Sing the song using your feet to feel the triple meter Feel the Legato (or smooth phrases) of this song • Cut a 12" crepe page streamer • Say, "' Jesus, Gift of Love' should be sung smoothly; each note should connect to the next." • Demonstrate connected singing by wadding up the crepe paper in the fist of one hand and pulling the paper out of the fist with the other hand as you sing the first phrase Review the REAL Christmas Story in the Bible found in Luke 2 • Display a nativity scene and a Bible • Ask, "Whose birthday do we celebrate on Christmas?" (Jesus) • "Where did Jesus sleep?" (Manger) • "Who was Baby Jesus' mother?" (Mary) • "Who came to visit the baby?" (Shepherds and Wise Men) • Read Matthew 2:1 Make Christmas Streamers • Gather: A margarine tub lid for each child, white and gold fabric / ribbon strips, scissors (for adults) • Before class, cut the center out of the lids, making a plastic ring • Assist the children as they tie the ribbon or fabric on the ring • Use the streamer ring to feel the downbeat as the children move the streamers through the air and up and down with the beat Discuss key words in the text of this song • Say, "Peace is a relaxed, calm feeling deep inside. It is not feeling worried or upset.
