2 46515 OUT STANDING IN THEIR FIELD CAST COSTUMES SET PROPS STAGING This musical can accommodate a smaller cast by eliminating some parts* and assigning their lines to other children. With the exception of Mary and Joseph, all parts can be done by either boys or girls. Feel free to adjust pronouns in the dialogue as needed. Simple Biblical costumes are appropriate. Another option is for the Angels to wear white shirts, the Shepherds to wear dark colored shirts and Mary and Joseph to dress in bright colors. Missy should appear to be younger than the rest of the cast—possibly by wearing a hair bow or a baseball cap. No set is needed. However, you can make your production as elaborate as resources and time allow. One possibility is for the angels to be on one side of the stage and the shepherds on the other. Another treatment is for the angels to be elevated in some way and standing behind the shepherds. If your worship space has steps in the front, this would work perfectly. Another option would be to borrow inexpensive kitchen and bathroom step stools and have the angels stand on those. A large star and clouds made of cardboard and glitter would be a possible addition. The only props needed are a manger and doll to represent Baby Jesus. Also, Harpo could carry a cardboard harp. Harp templates are available on the internet. Gabriel could carry a plastic or cardboard trumpet. All angels and shepherds enter during the "Overture." Head Angel can either exit after "Calling All Angels" and re-enter where indicated in Scene 1, or simply remain on stage and step out of the group to say his first line. Mary and Joseph could be dressed as shepherds or angels at the beginning of the musical, and then exit for a costume adjustment after "Outstanding News" and re-enter during "Transitional Music" before Scene 3b. The manger and doll should also be brought in during "Transitional Music."
