ADVENT & CHRISTMAS
LITURGICAL ANTHEMS
Long the Days of Waiting
Mark Shepperd.
An introspective Advent piece that captures the sense of longing and waiting so
central to the season. The use of soprano and tenor soloists as well as oboe,
cello and wind chimes add greatly to the overall effect. Some a cappella and
divisi measures are found at key moments. Beautiful!

When Came in Flesh the Incarnate Word
Howard Helvey.
New music from the uncommonly creative Howard Helvey is paired with a
poetic 19th-century text to create a quietly majestic new anthem. This lovely
Christmas carol, incorporating an original hymn tune, is both engaging and
thoughtful. The exquisite organ accompaniment provides a solid foundation for
this message of hope and contemplation. Highly recommended!

Who Will Go to Bethlehem?
Simon Andrews.
This original text by Donald Goldstrom juxtaposes events of the Christmas story
with the present time. The implied answer to the question posed in the title is
that we will go if the caroler will point the way. Set in flowing triple meter with
an engaging repeated refrain which mostly alternates between 6/8, 7/8 and
3/4. Lyrical and lovely.

The Angel Gabriel
arr. Paul W. Lohman.
This arrangement of the familiar carol begins very much like a traditional four-
part setting but progresses in the expansion of the choral parts as the piece
develops. The voice leading is superb and accessible throughout. Mary's final
statement of "My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name" is florid and joyful.
The final choral "Gloria" ends softly. An engaging and interesting arrangement!

The composer has created a new original musical setting based on Josiah G.
Holland's well known text "There's a Song in the Air." The opening introduction
depicts the twinkling stars and beautifully captures the spirit of the text. Useful
for churches or for concert use. Duration: 3:10

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Howard Helvey.
This famous 18th-century text compares Jesus to an apple tree - it has
become a classic. Respected composer Howard Helvey has created a hymn
tune of majestic simplicity that unfolds the poem in verses. There is an
early-American quality to the tune that matches the words well. This unique
a cappella setting is lovely and engaging.

Joy to the World
from "A Christmas Triptych"
Richard Proulx.
This setting of Joy to the World has the feel of a work by Handel, complete with
a sly quotation from the "Hallelujah" chorus at the end. Stanzas 2 and 3 are
combined and set in fugal fashion. Fun to sing, it will become a favorite of the
choir and the congregation! Highly recommended!
