Time to take to the sea with this exciting pirate-
themed piece for young band. Bass instruments
open, representing the vast sea, accompanied
by an ocean drum that effectively mimics the
mesmerizing sound of the waves. As the turbulent
waters become treacherous, heroic themes grow,
representing the daring pirates as they brave the
stormy seas.

sense of forward motion are all used in this concert
band work to create an exciting soundscape for
young musicians. Careful attention has been paid to

song Yuki. The composer has combined this song
with an original festive melody to create a joyful
winter holiday piece. Everyone gets a chance to
shine in this piece for beginning band, suitable for

Spirit of the StallionBrian Balmages. Inspired
by the powerful and magnificent stallion, the music
conjures sentiments of pride, strength, daring and
sheer power of will. Through simple yet compelling
meter changes, one can feel the stallion galloping
as it goes through a series of changing moods -
from bold to graceful and fierce to humble. A truly
spirited work!

l Spring UnfoldingPeter Terry. A musical
celebration of the change of season from the dark
of winter to the anticipation of spring. The piece
begins with a contemplative opening before diving
into a lilting and tuneful 3/4 melody. Delightfully
unique, this piece is a bright and cheery addition
to beginning band literature.

4 StrykerTyler Arcari. The title refers to a worker
who assisted a blacksmith with his craft, wielding
a hammer and shaping iron to their will. The dark
and harsh atmosphere is enhanced by percussive
sounds of their demanding craft. The break drum
provides a hammered-iron effect while the china
cymbal mimics the steam of tempering steel. A
uniquely programmatic work great for opening a
concert or providing an exciting finish.

The Tears of Arizona (Pearl Harbor Remem-
bered)Brian Balmages. Commissioned to
commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack
on Pearl Harbor, the music begins very solemnly,
referring to the "tears" of oil that continue to be
shed daily by the sunken ship. The section The
Pride of Arizona moves past the tears and to the
pride of the crew members and the feeling of the
"spirit of aloha." Percussion loosely imitates the
groove of a luau, yet is juxtaposed with moments
of pause and reflection. The final statement feels
incomplete, reminding the audience that the tears
have not stopped flowing. Magical!

4 TemblorSean O'Loughlin. Get ready to shake
things up! The title is of Spanish origin and means
tremor or earthquake, which is most appropriate
for this developing band work. The music is as
unstoppable as the natural disaster it embodies;
aggressive in nature but with some well-placed
repose followed by a stunning maestoso climax,
it's sure to create quite a stir at your next concert.

The Tenth PlanetMichael Story. If you direct a
band at the very easy level, you'll want to seriously
consider this work! The idea of a possible tenth
planet in our solar system excites the imagination.
Here, the concept is depicted musically by
moments of floating tranquility and bold themes
full of the daring of space exploration. It's amazing
what a fabulous effect is achieved here with such
technically easy parts. A riveting overture and very
highly recommended!

call of "Land ho!" echoing across the band, this
seafaring adventure is off to a rollicking start. A
pirate's tale unfolds, complete with buried treasure
and a battle on the high seas. Written in rondo
form, a strong, driving pirate theme serves as a
unifying force throughout the piece, surrounding
