A haunting lyrical melody, lush voicings and dynamic contrasts are but a few of the winning features of this alto sax feature. This ballad at an accessible grade level also has some spots where the full band really sparkles and a chorus where the lead trumpet shines and gives the soloist a little break. The solo is entirely notated and changes are provided for embellishment or improvisation if desired. This chart is a winner! Additionally, it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentation. The tenor solo is all written out and the rhythm section parts are very clear. No one handles Ellington for younger ensembles better than Mark Taylor, and this well-crafted arrangement shows why. Although Mark uses a written trumpet solo on the bridge, the main theme is handled by the full ensemble playing primarily tutti rhythms. Included are solos for trumpet and tenor (written or ad lib.) then a brief double time swing section featuring the entire ensemble. We think the Duke himself would have liked this one. Set here as a solo feature for flugelhorn or trumpet, the soft Latin/ballad style and lush accompaniment parts help make this one particularly attractive. The solo is completely written, and the soloist can improvise around the melody if desired. Every now and then it comes along, a ballad so hauntingly beautiful that it may just be the highlight of your concert! This is one such gem. After a solo piano introduction, the familiar minor melody is gently taken up by the band. Summer Shower is an imaginative rock ballad for developing groups featuring inventive harmonies that make it sound sophisticated and far more difficult than it is. With a beautifully conceived melody the solo part is highly emotional, lyrical and appropriate for the style, and is supported by an interesting harmonic progression. The soloist is supported by sweet counter melodies, there's a section for subtle improvisation by the featured soloist, and a recap of the theme before moving on to an ending with a brief solo cadenza. There are options included for reduced or expanded instrumentations and the excellent dynamic contrasts provide additional interest and maintain the direction of the chart.
