Gordon Goodwin. Here's Gordon Goodwin's slow, funky version of the holiday classic that's very clever with the initial melody line played by bass trombone and bari sax. This is a stellar arrangement of the iconic tune written by Paul McCartney and the title song from the movie. It was the reason for the great success of the Stan Kenton album "7.5 on the Richter Scale." The melody is first stated by alto saxophone, trumpet and trombone before the chart roars on! If you're looking for a contemporary chart, written for the great Kenton band, and based on a familiar tune, this is the one! Metroliner, with its 16th-note contemporary groove, portrays the chugging and propulsive feel of a train ride through America's northeast corridor. This uniquely funky programmatic chart was awarded runner-up in the 2016 Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest. It opens with a tenor player setting it up, then bari sax joining in, then all saxes, then everyone. It's not a tenor feature, but it's a great vehicle for your tenor soloist and has meaty parts for all parties, making it an excellent selection for concerts and festivals. A clever title means a clever chart - this one opens with the sound of the barnyard and then it gets funky immediately with a very cool bass part. A suggested written tenor solo is provided along with chord changes for trombone 1, and optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. Matt Harris' funky rock tune includes conservative ranges, fully notated rhythm section parts, and repetitive rhythms, making it playable by advancing groups through professionals. The piano has a solo which is followed by an open solo section that includes chord changes in all parts. In addition to the rhythm section and trombones, the scoring calls for five trumpets, optional vibes, and SATTB saxophones; however, an optional alto part is provided for the soprano part. The saxes start things off a cappella then things heat up in a quirky, but clever Goodwin way. Solo space is provided for a variety of players with separate sample solos provided for C, B-flat, E-flat, and trombone soloists. An auxiliary percussion part plus all the usual optional parts plus vibes are included for augmented instrumentations. The melody is stated by 2nd trumpet and 1st alto with solo space for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is critical and the rhythm section may want to spend some quality time together.
