FOREWORD In his letter to the Philippians, Paul referred to the name of Jesus as "the name above all names." Messiah, Emmanuel, Jehovah, Wonderful Coun- selor, Prince of Peace, King of Kings, and ultimately, Lamb of God, are just a few of the many names used for Jesus throughout the scripture. At His Name is a 30-minute work for SATB choir that reflects on Jesus's ministry and life on earth, and looks at the monumental effect his name had on history. Starting with the early days where he began preaching and performing miracles, then continuing up to those final momentous events of his passion, this work tells the story in 6 choral anthems and an optional reprise. The music is mostly original with styles ranging from the stately "Name of All Majesty" to the gospel groove of "A Miracle Man." "If You Love Me" is a reflective ballad and "Behold the Holy Lamb of God" is a dramatic telling of the crucifixion. The soulful, stir- ring ballad, "At His Name," is the focus and climax of the entire work. The final reprise of "Name of All Majesty" concludes with a stirring arrangement of "He Is Lord," but the work can end on a more subdued note if desired by eliminating the reprise altogether. At His Name can be used anytime during the Lenten season or Holy Week, and would be par- ticularly poignant on Palm Sunday. Accompaniment can be provided by piano, or by an instrumental ensem- ble scored by Ed Hogan, which includes parts for Flute, Oboe, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Violin I & II, Viola, Cello, Electric Bass, Piano, Harp, and Percussion.
