He Dance of the Reed Flutes—P.I. Tchaikovsky/
arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle. Taken from Act II of
Tchaikovsky's timeless "Nutcracker" ballet,
Carrie Lane Gruselle's arrangement of Dance of
the Reed Flutes is a sugar-sprinkled "plum" for
string orchestras. It's a lively way to incorporate a
traditional Christmas favorite into secular holiday
concerts for upper-elementary/middle school
performers.

Griesinger. In this modern twist on Mendelssohn's
epic Hebrides Overture, low strings get to dig into
energetic accented bass lines as two prominent
themes weave through the orchestra. This
arrangement is very playable in first position with
a few simple accidentals. Every section of the
orchestra is featured using the same melodic
echoes that inspired Mendelssohn almost two
centuries ago. Includes optional drum set.

themes of Sleigh Ride among the sections of the
ensemble so that every player can enjoy being

falling winter winds, and the passengers enjoying
their ride.

He The Abduction from the Seraglio (Over-
ture)—W.A. Mozart/arr. Hoffman. From the
comic opera filled with pirates, Turkish princes,
kidnapping and daring rescues, Mozart's The
Abduction from the Seraglio is the piece of music
that generated the (possibly fictional) "too many
notes" story. It is written in the Turkish "janissary"
style, a style of music that fascinated Europe at
the time. In this arrangement, the right hand of the
piano is frequently written 8va to help re-create
the piccolo that figured prominently in the original.

e Allegro—G.P. Telemann/arr. Robert Sieving.

concepts, this piece features limited third position
for the violins, cellos, and basses. Violas share in
the thematic materials with string basses mostly
sharing the basso continuo line with cellos.

Caponegro. Containing selected themes from the

other symphonic composers to follow.

4e Allegro from "Serenade No. 1 in D"—W.A.
Mozart/arr. Robert D. McCashin. This delightful
Serenade in D was completed in 1769, when
Mozart was a mere 13 years of age (an ideal fact to
share with young students)! The first movement,
even though composed at such a young age,
provides challenges for every musician in the
ensemble and is musically appealing to players
and audience.

arr. Steven J. Campbell. Mozart's Symphony
No. 17 was composed in 1772 when he was
just 16 years old. Originally for oboes, horns and
strings, this string orchestra arrangement of the
first movement has maintained the composition's
original spirit while making it more approachable
for students. It's a wonderful piece for teachers
who are working on Classical style and technique.

4e Allegro Moderato from "Symphony No. 3"—
Camille Saint-Saens/arr. Deborah Baker Monday.
This movement of the famous "Organ Symphony"
includes two of the most memorable themes
ever penned by Saint-Saens. This arrangement
includes the highly energetic string theme and
the beautiful fugue based on his four-note theme
which cycles throughout the entire symphony.
The two contrasting sections of this arrangement
offer two extremes of bowing style: one requiring
heavy strokes at the frog and the other using
legato, expressive, full bowing.
