Begin Transmission—John Herndon. John
Herndon's Begin Transmission is an exciting work
for percussion ensemble designed for students
with about one year of experience. The mallet parts
primarily feature step-wise motion and lay very
comfortably in the key of D minor while the chimes
and timpani provide harmonic impact. In most
cases, rhythms are comprised of quarter notes and
eighth notes. The piece is written for 13 players but
fear not! Smaller groups can omit certain specified
parts down to eight players, or larger groups can
double or even triple parts for an exciting, percussive
spectacle. This work provides a great platform for
young performers to apply the skills and concepts
learned in beginning percussion literature.

Bucket Jams—Kevin Mixon. Junkyard ensembles
are popular today because they are engaging,
relevant, and employ styles that are familiar
and motivating to students. This book includes
six easy junkyard ensembles that are perfect
for classroom music classes and instrumental
groups. Performance notes for each piece explain
style characteristics and playing techniques.
Preparatory exercises are also included. All pages
are reproducible for groups of any size, and each
piece is playable by buckets alone, by buckets
and garbage cans, or by buckets, garbage cans
and auxiliary instruments. Traditional percussion
instruments may also be used on any part. Skills
learned in these pieces are aligned with beginning
percussion methods while meeting the national and
state learning standards. An absolute Blast!

Drum It Down—Chris Crockarell. The grooves
are infectious, the parts are playable at a grade
2 level, and only standard instruments are used.
DrumZuhBit, (scored for snare drum, tom, 4
timpani, crash cymbals, and 2 jam blocks or wood
blocks, tambourine and suspended cymbal) is a
cross between a marching cadence and a tribal
dance. The sum of the parts will truly grab your
audience!. The funk drive of Snare Necessities
(scored for 4 snare drums, tambourine, cowbell,
ride cymbal and large tom) gives 4 players the
chance to show off. Each player gets a snare drum
plus one other instrument (fist-bumps not included).
As the title implies, Timp or Metal, (scored for 4
timpani, tambourine, cowbell, ride cymbal and
suspended cymbal) trades licks between timpani
and a collection of metal instruments. The
syncopation mixed with the color contrast makes
this one come alive! Program one or program them
all! A serious bang for your buck!

H Latin Cuisine—Lalo Davila. This collection
of four short (all less then 2 1/2 minutes)
independent selections works great for the
beginning percussion ensemble. Each piece is
very repetitive and easy to teach yet also provides
some mallet solo opportunities. Throughout each
work the melody is played on bells but may be
doubled in a higher octave on the xylophone. This
is also scored for marimba and flute can also be
added for additional texture. The hand percussion
is mostly scored for bongos, congas and timbales
with a few other hand instruments you will have
in your band room. The four selections are A La
Escuela, Just Bring the Soca, Baila Conmigo and
Por, La Ruth. Enjoy!

Lattes on the House—Chris Roode. Lattes on the
House is an introductory piece written to teach the
application of beginning rhythms to a percussion
ensemble. Written for three sizes of conga drums
along with claves and tambourine, this five player
instrumentation can be easily expanded by doubling
or tripling up on each part. Various sizes of frame or
hand drums can be effective in place of the congas.
The ensemble develops grooves together and
struts its stuff building to a lengthy solo section.
You bring the espresso, have the students bring
the steamed milk, and in no time you'll be enjoying
Lattes on the House.

Low Tide—Ralph Hicks. A sweet and tender work
by Ralph Hicks, Low Tide evokes the gentle sounds
of the sea through sensitive swells, special wave-
like effects, unique colors, and attention to mallet
choices. The piece focuses on controlling a slow
tempo with constant dynamic contrasts. It serves as
a great way to train younger players not just how to
play percussion instruments with proper technique,
but how to play with musical sensitivity. When a
piece educates as much as it delights, you know
you have something special!

Puzzle Pieces—Josh Gottry. Puzzle Pieces is a
minimalist work that allows the performers to be
part of the composition process. Rather than a
traditional score and parts, each player is given
three sets of measures and a final measure. Once
the conductor sets the tempo, each player decides
which measure(s) to play out of each set and for
how long. As they progress, the measures become
more intense rhythmically until the conductor cues
the final measure and all players end the piece in
unison. Clever, fun and creatively inspiring!

this package the quintessential educational tool
for teaching and motivating the young percussion
ensemble. The package includes a conductor's
