H Novo Lenio—Samuel Hazo. This is a Samuel
Hazo's National Band Association award-winning
composition, a continuous three-movement
work that offers various styles and much to keep
your interest. Based on a school alma mater, the
sections are varied in mood yet cohesive in thematic
material. The first movement, Remembrance, is
somewhat somber in tone; the second movement
Qui Non Proficit Deficit is more dissonant; and the
final movement A New Beginning is meant to sound
full and proud.

R. Hazo. Samuel Hazo's very successful work for

4 Pedal to the Metal—David R. Gillingham. The
title means full speed ahead and is the inspiration
for this driving 6/8 musical dynamo. The title is
also appropriate in that metal instruments play a
prominent role in the orchestration. The important
progression of the piece is about starting with a
small, fragmented idea and elaborating on it,
enhanced by an array of metallic percussion
until it grows into the final, spectacular
finished product.

Rephrygeration—Todd Stalter. A dynamic
concert opener or closer that will most certainly cast
a spell over your audience. Fast and furious from

l
Resignation—Ed Kiefer. Although technically
very easy, this composition will develop a maturity
of musicianship when rehearsed and performed.
Written as a tribute to a lost friend, the hymn
tune My Shepherd Will Supply My Need conveys
the appropriate sentiment. This setting will give
everyone a greater appreciation for the way music
can help us express our feelings and emotions.

Rest—Frank Ticheli. A lyric and moving adaptation
of an earlier SATB choral work, There Will Be Rest.
In creating this setting, the harmony, dynamics and
registration of the original have been preserved,
allowing the fragile beauty and quiet dignity to be
maintained. And while the concert band is faithful
to the choral, certain aspects have been enhanced
which keeps it independent, having its own
strengths and unique qualities.

Rise of the Silver City—Rossano Galante. The
sweeping sounds and cinematic nature that we
look forward to from this accomplished composer
are all apparent in this resonate work. The title of
this colorful composition is derived from the city
of Meriden, Connecticut that was once the silver
capital of the world. Echoing brass flourishes,
lyrical woodwind lines and stately themes combine
to drive this majestic piece to its heroic climax.

The Rite of Spring (Excerpts from)—Igor
Stravinsky/arr. Robert Buckley. The premier
performance of this masterwork is the stuff of
legends with disagreements whether it was the
music or the choreography that caused the near-
riot of the audience. Considered to be one of the
most influential works of the 20th century, this
work laid the basis for modern jazz, film music
and even heavy metal. It's all here: the driving
rhythms, the haunting Russian folk melodies,
the brilliant scoring, the crunching harmonies
and the epic drama! True to the original, this one
is a valued and important addition to the wind
band repertoire!

l Ritmico (for Concert Band)—James Barnes.
Bold and bright, this substantial work for concert
band provides serious musical material that
is both resolute and impressive. Punctuated
staccato rhythm figures propel the music forward,
contrasting nicely with sustained and majestic
melodies through the main portion of the work.
A lush and flowing middle section presents an
alternate style before a brisk and echoing recap
finishes the piece in grand style.

H River of Life—Steven Reineke. We urge you
to look at this important work! This composer
is the resident composer for the Cincinnati
Pops Orchestra and we feel that this is an
incredible composition...the highs, the lows,
the development, the scoring, the transitions,
the themes...all point to a piece that must be
given a place in the band repertoire. Best of all,
is that this work will appeal on several levels, the
melodies and rhythms immediately grab you, but
on a deeper level, the composer's skill is quite
evident. Our highest recommendations!

Scarborough Fair—arr. Andrew Boysen Jr. This
fiery setting of the well-known folk song starts
quietly, then builds to a heart-pounding finish. As
this arrangement makes up the final movement
of "Three Folk Song Settings for Band," intriguing
musical references to the previous two movements
create added interest.

Scramble—Todd Stalter. A tumultuous concert
opener or closer intended to depict two characteristics
of the title, the frantic collecting of things together in
a disorderly way, and darting about quickly with a
sense of urgency. Once the theme is presented the
fun really starts! The action revs up as the musical
"parts" are separated and combined in unique and
haphazard combinations, all at break-neck speed
that will leave everyone breathless!

l Sea of Tranquility (The Seas of the Moon,
Movement 1)—Robert Buckley. Since the dawn
of humanity we've been mesmerized by the moon
and what we thought to be "seas" on the surface.
The Sea of Tranquility is probably the best-known
of these thanks to the landing of Apollo 11 in
1969. This first movement from the larger four-
movement suite captures the astronauts' sense
of awe and wonder, from the explosive lift-off to
flowing weightlessness and finally the triumph and
jubilation of the historic lunar landing.
