H Sedona—Steven Reineke. Don't miss this
distinctive composition! Having has had several
wonderful pieces published already, this successful
composer has captured in musical ideas the natural
landscape of mountains and wide open spaces,
and uses them to paint a musical canvas that is
at once bold, entertaining, and filled with life. A
short, memorable theme runs throughout the work,
showing up in a delicate flute solo, an intricate
woodwind fugue, a warm trombone solo, and a
bold, triadic trumpet statement that will pick you
up right out of your seat. A marvelous piece that we
highly recommend to all bands!

Serenity—Ola Gjeilo/trans. J. Eric Wilson.
Beautifully arranged by J. Eric Wilson along with
the composer, this version for wind band maintains
all the wonder and magic of the original choral
work. The opening is ethereal and somber, with
sustained chords in clarinets and bowed percussion
supporting a delicate oboe solo. The middle section
shifts the principal modality from minor to major,
and the layering orchestration and rising tessitura
creates a tremendous rush of energy that leads to
a triumphant climax. The closing section returns
to the timbre of the opening, but now painted with
hopefulness and healing.

H Shepherd's Hey—Percy Grainger/arr. Rogers.
This is a most welcome publication! This well
known piece has long been available in an edition
with only Grainger's compressed score. This newly
edited set of parts comes with a full score that
directors will really appreciate. As for the music
itself, let us just say that this delightful piece is such
a major part of the foundation of the wind repertoire
that it should be in every library!

Shock Wave—Gary D. Ziek. Driven by a constant
sense of propulsion and rippling waves of motion,
this piece is aptly titled. The initial shock is provided
by the percussion, leading to a tension filled
section with multiple layers of sound scattered
throughout the ensemble. Each new entrance is
accompanied by solo percussion, building musical
pressure to a frenzied, swirling conclusion with the
percussion providing one final "aftershock" for a
resounding finish.

Short Ride in a Fast Machine—John Adams/
arr. Saucedo. Composed in 1986, this fast-paced
and dynamic work took the symphonic world by
storm. Available here in a playable setting for school
ensembles, Richard Saucedo transposed the key
down a third from the original and skillfully adapted
some of the more complicated rhythmic patterns
without sacrificing any of the excitement and drive. A
wonderful introduction to "minimalist" music and one
of America's treasured contemporary composers.

Shrine of the Fallen (Kiev 2014)—Brian Balmages.
Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in
2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk
song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for
many protestors as a symbol of national pride while
also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer
as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music
is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of the
Ukrainian national anthem add to the intensity of the
music, which features the instrumentalists singing
in four-part harmony at the very end of the piece.
Absolutely stunning!

Ticheli. In this fine four-movement work, Ticheli
pays homage to authentic Shaker music as he, in
his own words, "sought subtle ways to preserve
their simple, straightforward beauty." The work is
based on the songs: In Yonder Valley; Dance; Hear,
Take This Lovely Flower and Simple Gifts. Some of
the movements can stand alone in performance, as
your programming needs dictate.

retains the energy and authenticity of the original.

building energy until crashing into a final chaotic
cacophony of sound.
