Vocalise—Sergei Rachmaninoff/arr. Robert Allan
Petker. Vocalise by Rachmaninoff is famous for
its beautiful, wandering melody over a luscious
chamaeleon-like harmonic foundation. Like a river,
it flows effortlessly through an evolving terrain and
immerses the listener in transforming currents of
color to a breathtaking conclusion. A great teaching
piece for phrasing, breath control, and tone.

lt The Waiting Sky—Oliver Tarney. The Waiting
Sky is an SATB a cappella motet by Oliver Tarney.
The evocative text by Lucia Quinault depicts a rural
winter scene with "breathing clouds and bare
trees," skillfully set to music with lovely harmonies
and a nice interplay between the voices. There is a
sense of waiting for the shining star, and the piece
could be appropriate for Advent or at other times
throughout the church year.

lL Wasserfahrt—Felix Mendelssohn/arr. Larry
D. Garrett. Heinrich Heine was a favorite poet for

Mendelssohn seizes upon. Throughout this short
piece, the listener senses the insistent rocking of the
boat and slapping of the water. This arrangement
for male voices adds to the growing number of
masterworks now available for male singers.

Abide—Dan Forrest. Dan Forrest's SATB divisi
setting of a poem by the late Jake Adam York is
simply stunning! Both the poet and composer
were inspired by the old hymn Abide with Me and
elements of that tune can be found throughout the
composition, though the poem remains secular.
The music is homophonic in nature and leaves the
listener with a sense of, to quote the composer,
"the warmth of a summer's evening." The piano
part plays a vital role in the coloring of the piece and
seamlessly connects the choral entrances. Abide
is a rare and beautiful piece of art; we give it our
highest recommendation!
