Gwyneth Walker. Steal Away interprets the traditional spiritual Steal Away to Jesus as a song of alternating sorrow and strength. The refrains are presented quietly and mournfully: "Steal away to Jesus. I ain't got long to stay here." In contrast, the verses are sung with conviction: "My Lord calls me, calls me by the thunder." Similarly, the accompaniment varies from florid arpeggiations (for the refrains) to rhythmic chordal entrances (for the verses). Of special interest is the use of scale patterns. In the opening refrain, and on every occurrence of the words "steal away," the scales descend, marked as falling tears, or stealing away. At the conclusion of the song, the scales rise, as the soul ascending to heaven. "My Lord calls me, calls me home." 10606261 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.60 10606262 SSA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.35 4 Steal Away—Stacey V. Gibbs. This arrangement by one of America's leading arrangers of spirituals captures the pain of this world while celebrating the hope of the life yet to come. Though slow in tempo, it has a strength, energy and drive about it. A short tenor solo which encourages some ad lib and the use of the full range of all of the voices makes this arrangement truly stand out. Worthy of the best tenor/bass choirs but accessible by all tenor/bass choirs, this is a must-have. 10775511 TTBB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.10 HL Still I Rise—Rosephanye Powell. "Though I have been wounded; aching heart, full of pain, still I rise, yes, still I rise..." With its spiritual-like style, this original choral arrangement with solo speaks poignantly of the struggles of African-American women. Commissioned by the ensemble Vox Femina, it is still attracting a lot of attention. 10873681 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.25 10873681L SATB Large Print . . . . . . . . . 3.25 3304157 SSAA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.75 H The Storm Is Passing Over—Charles Albert Tindley/arr. Barbara W. Baker. This is a lot of fun! Even choirs with limited experience singing gospel music will be able to perform the syncopated and heavily accented vocal parts with ease. The final repeated chorus features stunning dynamic contrasts, hand claps and a dramatic ritard before the final ending. A very strong choice! 3093036 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.15 5467071 Three-Part Treble . . . . . . . . . 2.15 H Take Me to the Water—arr. Rollo Dilworth. This is exceptionally well done! Highly recommended! 10010513 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.10 10070027 SSAA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.10 l There Is a Balm in Gilead—arr.
