Rosanna—David Paich/arr. Victor Lopez. Rosanna
was a huge hit in the '80s from the group Toto, with
a great hook that still resonates today! This chart
begins with a big introduction and transitions to a
more subdued style while the syncopated melodic
lines keeps it flowing. Everyone gets a chance
at the melodic hook, and there's a very effective
building of intensity to the melody. Great tune, nice
chart! Highly recommended!

The Shadow of Your Smile—Johnny Mandel/
arr. Roy Phillippe. Every now and then it comes
along, a ballad so hauntingly beautiful that it may
just be the highlight of your concert! This is one
such gem. After a solo piano introduction, the
familiar minor melody is gently taken up by the
band. Alto sax and trumpet both get solo passages
but, for the most part, it is the ensemble effort that
makes this chart one of the best.

Shakey Ground—arr. Paul Murtha. This 1975
tune by the Temptations is one of their later hits,
co-written by Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel and
decidedly funkadelic in style. This chart features the
infectious bass line first stated by baritone sax and
guitar, and later joined by the rest of the ensemble
playing the funky riffs. The solo section on a one-
chord vamp can easily be opened up, but samples
are provided for alto sax, trumpet and trombone.
You will love the way the ensemble layers in near
the ending. Shakey Ground is definitely a fun chart
with attitude!
