Struttin' with Some Barbecue—arr. Rick Stitzel.
Here's a fresh take on one of the all-time standards
of early jazz composed by Lillian Hardin Armstrong
and Don Raye, and made famous by Louis
Armstrong. It's an easy swinger with the wonderful
melodic line featured by the trumpets at first, then
the saxes. The written or improvised solo space
is for trumpet featuring appealing backgrounds.
There's a hint of old time jazz style mixed in
with a more traditional straight-ahead swing
feel. Playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations, this is a great way to introduce a
bit of jazz history with a chart that's also fun to play.
What a loveable tune!

Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Peter Blair. Here's
one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key!
The original Nat Adderly gospel/rock-style recording
is the starting point for this accessible arrangement.
After the first time through the head featuring the
altos and trumpets, the stop-time section from
the original is used with the harmonized melody.
There's also a solid shout chorus that leads to a
soft ensemble passage before the written alto
sax solo. Arranged for full jazz ensemble, it'll also
sound great with a minimum of 3 saxes (AAT), 3

is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The
arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there
are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing
in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns
throughout, although trumpets would work just fine.
There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/
flugel. Very nice!

Artistry in Rhythm—Stan Kenton/arr. Paul
Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan Kenton in
the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature
and a true classic from the big-band era. Paul
Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this for
younger players while maintaining the flavor and
energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off
followed by the iconic trombone solo in the medium
Latin section. The exciting double time swing section
features the entire ensemble, then the maestoso
theme returns to close things out. Impressive!

band and the audience. No improvised solos, just
ensemble playing and some great section solis.

H Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter Blair.
This is a great old tune! Except...there's nothing
"old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing
version of a marvelous, often-played standard
that opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is
filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes are
featured on a chorus and there is a written or ad lib
solo for piano.
