BLUES & SWING medium
Doodlin' (Little Big Band)—Horace Silver/arr.
Chuck Israels. Horace Silver created a blues with
a perfectly consistent character and structured
the accompaniments and his piano solo in perfect
balance. Orchestrating the piano parts from
the original recording is a fairly straightforward
process. Some thought goes into choosing which
instruments best express the music and there's
some attention paid to contrasting timbres and
textures, but so much of the music already exists
in Silver's piano playing, both in his solos and in
his accompaniments, that the piece is already there
without additional writing. It's a perfect framework
that will produce a telling performance. Small Band:
ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar,
Bass, and Drums.

Eleventh Hour—Steve Briody. Need an impressive
and bluesy swing/shuffle chart in your book? This
Steve Briody chart is it! This driving, energetic shuffle
with a great groove will keep your players engaged
and put a smile on everyone's face. Every horn
section gets the melody at some point, there's an
awesome sax soli, and a drum solo interlude after the
solos. The ranges are reasonable, and the solos are
written in the parts for tenor and trumpet but can be
opened up to include anyone. Highly recommended!

Fables of Faubus—Charles Mingus/arr. Sy
Johnson. Here's the classic Mingus chart in a
version from the Simply Mingus series that exudes a
sense of anger and sarcasm and definitely projects
an edginess. The baritone sax and bass trombone
will have fun with the opening, and there's plenty
for the rest of the band to get excited about in this
medium swing romp. Includes suggested solos and
optional parts for flute, clarinet and French horn.

Holmes. From the brash, irreverent and wildly
popular television series Family Guy, comes this
supercharged, big band style theme that swings
hard! The tempo is medium, the style is swing and
it features an alto sax solo and hot ensemble hits!

l A Few Minor Alterations—Rich Woolworth.
This minor blues chart features the sax section
on the melody along with several breaks for the
drummer to be spotlighted. Following an alto sax
solo, there's a soft ensemble section which builds
effectively into a solo for trumpet. After a cool
shout chorus, it's back to the sax melody and a
full ensemble finish. An ideal chart for contest or
festival performances!

along, offering plenty of room for your drummer to
fill and kick, leading to a dynamic and electrifying
shout chorus that really revs into full gear! The
ranges are modest and all the suggested drum
solo fills are notated to ensure success. Great
melodic lines, attractive changes, and masterful
scoring make this the perfect selection for both
concert and contest! It's a brilliant showcase for
your drummer!

4 Finley Blues—Chris Scarnato. This straight-
ahead, swinging blues chart is just what the doctor
ordered! With reasonable brass ranges, there's
plenty of call-and-response writing between the
sax section and brass. There's also an open solo
section for anyone with changes included. A great
set of shout choruses brings this one to an effective
close. This one will be fun!

Fly Me to the Moon—Bart Howard/arr. Allen
Gray. Oh, jazz standards just don't get any better
than Bart Howard's Fly Me to the Moon! This chart
pays homage to the great Count Basie band and
their iconic version with Frank Sinatra. With a subtle
swingin' opening, this chart builds into a big tutti
section before there's room for improvised solos.
Finally, the band enters again to swing it hard all
the way to the end. This one's got to be in your jazz
library. Highly recommended!

4 Great Minds Swing Alike—Erik Sherburne. Jazz
bands can't swing if they aren't swinging together,
and Great Minds Swing Alike is just the chart to
prove it! It swings hard right off the top with a sax
soli, then a trumpet soli as the melody is passed
through the band while the rhythm section digs
in with a steady groove. The changes are simple
allowing for an open solo section and the brass
ranges are modest. Also included is a big time
shout chorus and a cool ending. It's a great opener
to get the crowd in the mood or a super closer to
leave them wanting more!

Haitian Fight Song—Charles Mingus/arr.
Andrew Homzy. Featuring a dark intensity and a
powerful unison riff figure in minor, this medium
swing chart is a great showcase for your bass
player as well as the trombone section. The
harmonic structure is quite simple, but the depth
of the arrangement comes from the thematic
layers that are continually added throughout.
Written solo (or soli) sections are included for
the trombones and trumpets as well as notated
piano voicings and bass lines. The brass ranges
are moderate and optional parts are included
for flute, clarinet and F horn. Here is an exciting
Mingus gem for your band! Highly recommended!

H Hey Pachuco!—arr. Shane Porter. Your students
and audiences will love this burning swing tune
made famous by Royal Crown Revue. The groove
is set up with a drum solo laying down a Sing, Sing,
Sing Krupa feel before the band enters. A trumpet
with plunger solo leads into a sax soli section. Next,
the trumpet section is featured on a soli section
before a half-time feel gives the brass a chance
to shine. Returning to the original groove, a written
solo for tenor sax heightens the excitement. Finally,
there's an open drum solo before the band enters
and takes it on home. Pure excitement!

Hey Pocky Way (Little Big Band)—arr. Eric
Richards. Originally recorded by the New Orleans
funk band, The Meters, Hey Pocky Way is fashioned
here by Eric Richards in the style of the Dirty
Dozen Brass Band. It's a great change-of-pace
chart, and a fun style to play in the little big band
format. Scored for 6 horns (3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1
trombone) plus rhythm section with optional parts
included for alto sax, tenor sax and trombone.

How High the Moon—Morgan Lewis/arr. Dave
Wolpe. Now this is classy! Dave Wolpe puts the
trombones out front in this solid swinger, and boy
do they sound great carrying the tune! This sits
comfortably for bands at the medium level, and
three of your bone players get a chance to solo,
with suggested solos offered. What a great chart!

Hurricane Season—Troy Andrews/arr. John
Wasson. From the Trombone Shorty CD Backatown,
this tune features the powerful underlying pulse of a
New Orleans second line feel along with elements
of contemporary rock. There's written or improvised
solo space for trumpet. In this exciting chart, the
ensemble alternately screams with the full band
riffs, then settles into a simmering rhythmic groove.
Also included are written bass lines and piano
voicings. A real treat to perform and hear!

I Left My Heart in San Francisco—arr. Quincy
Jones. Quincy Jones wrote some incredible
arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count
Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By
Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in
San Francisco features great interplay between the
ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with
written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm,
and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo
space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are very
moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of bands.
It's a true classic! Highly recommended!

Building Walking Bass Lines—Ed Friedland. A walking bass line is the
most common approach to jazz bass playing, but it is also used in rock music,
blues, rockabilly, R&B, Gospel, Latin, country and many other types of music. The
term "walking" is used to describe the moving feeling that quarter notes create
in the bass part. The specific goal of this book is to familiarize players with the
techniques used to build walking bass lines and to make them aware of how the
process works. Through the use of 90 minutes of recorded rhythm tracks, players
will have the opportunity to put the new learning directly into action. This book
literally gives bassists the tools they need to build their own walking bass lines!
