Ever since the widespread popularity of the Jeff Jarvis funk original Critical Mass, requests for a sequel have been pouring in. At last, Jeff has composed and arranged Honk, with all the characteristics that made its predecessor such a hit with jazz ensembles, only at a slightly more accessible level. Like Critical Mass, Honk begins with a cool sax section introduction, clearly placing your baritone saxophonist in the limelight, but without excessive technical demands. Everyone has interesting and challenging parts to play throughout and the modulation near the end gives it an extra, added lift. The solos are open and the backgrounds can be varied by instrumentation. This one is hot from beginning to end! From the Trombone Shorty CD Backatown, this tune features the powerful underlying pulse of a New Orleans second line feel along with elements of contemporary rock. There's written or improvised solo space for trumpet. In this exciting chart, the ensemble alternately screams with the full band riffs, then settles into a simmering rhythmic groove. Check out this hip- hop setting by Paul Baker on the famous TV theme. This outstanding chart is also playable with optional expanded instrumentations. This arranger does this style extremely well and this one is no exception. Take a straight-eighth groove that's a little funky, plus a catchy melody at 130 bpm, and you have a winner! I'll Take Les features written solos for tenor, trumpet 2, or guitar, a lead trumpet range to written A, a great bari sax part, and optional parts for Latin percussion and vibes. Not too fast, not too slow, not too loud, not too soft...it's like Goldilocks wrote a funk chart. The rhythm section isn't featured but they are key to holding the band together. The open solo section will give soloists a chance to shine with a suggested solo scored in the tenor sax 1 part and chord changes included in all the parts. Definitely in the pocket! 10882384 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 50.00 H The Incredibles (Medley)—Michael Giacchino/ arr. Stephen Bulla. Mix the stylish spy music from the 1960s with a dose of cool jazz and you have a winning combination for jazz ensemble. From the Pixar hit animated movie, here's a high-energy and entertaining chart that captures the essence of the soundtrack perfectly, with three themes from the movie that offer a ton of variety and entertainment! A middle section in a jazz waltz style is framed by exciting rock styles that will be appealing to both audiences and developing players. Highly recommended! 2480196 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 55.00 It's All Right with Me—Cole Porter/arr. Alan Baylock. Here's Alan Baylock's contemporary treatment of this wonderful jazz standard in a half-time funk feel played with the half note equaling about 96 bpm. The lead trumpet range is to written B flat, a suggested written alto sax solo is included, optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations, and the initial melody is stated by trombones and then bounces to each section. Erik Morales. Here is the beautiful Herbie Hancock tune in a stellar arrangement by Erik Morales. Creative and sophisticated but not technically difficult. The lead trumpet range is only to written F-sharp top line. There are written solo spaces for tenor sax and piano, wonderful voicings and moving lines. This is a joyous chart from top to bottom. One of the first tunes to put the group Chicago on the map was this early rocker from 1970. John Wasson stays true to the original in this outstanding version for jazz ensemble that features solos for alto sax, guitar, and all the signature horn licks. It's funk/ rock... you know it, you love it! The tune is infectious, the arrangement is right on target with no individual solos but plenty of section and ensemble work. The sax soli is crazy hot and the lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff. Lots of unison lines, some fun bari sax licks and a very hip stop-time interlude that really cooks. With a bit of progressive rock and a lot of half-time funk, this great chart can be rounded out with optional synthesizer and electric guitar. The sticky grooves and melodies drive the point home. Two carefully transcribed solos are provided for trumpet and guitar that match the superb recorded solos, or they can be improvised as desired. Optional parts are included for flute/violin, clarinet and F horn, and the lead trumpet range is to G top of staff. You can have fun and experiment with different effects in the optional synthesizer part that's well worth the effort. Quest of the Red Knight is a tour-de-force chart in the tradition of Buddy Rich's Channel One Suite and West Side Story. Comprising three sections, it opens with an extended fanfare by horns only later joined by the rhythm section. The second section is a moderate jazz waltz featuring an abundance of full ensemble and sectional writing along with a guitar solo and an a cappella section. The third section is in an energetic 3/4 taken in 1 and includes an alto sax solo as well as a brief drum solo at the finale that could easily be extended. Suggested solos are included along with chord symbols. This study in triple meter is a great workout for the ensemble and the drummer! 10913773 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 70.00 Red Clay—Freddie Hubbard/arr. Mike Kamuf. A gem of a chart, here's Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay arranged for developing jazz bands. Characteristically, it's a straight-eighths groove at 132 bpm with written or ad lib solos for tenor sax and trumpet 2. A more subtle and quieter interlude adds variety and interest, and a unique and effective rhythm section break featuring the bassist leads to the return of the head. The trumpet 1 range is to written G on top of the staff and a nice shout chorus further adds to the fun. Playable with optional expanded instrumentations.
