With a bit of progressive rock and a lot of half-time funk, this great chart can be rounded out with optional synthesizer and electric guitar. The sticky grooves and melodies drive the point home. Two carefully transcribed solos are provided for trumpet and guitar that match the superb recorded solos, or they can be improvised as desired. Optional parts are included for flute/violin, clarinet and F horn, and the lead trumpet range is to G top of staff. You can have fun and experiment with different effects in the optional synthesizer part that's well worth the effort. Serious fun and great change-of-pace programming! 10881878 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 52.00 4 Put It in the Esky—Roger Schmidli. This chart offers a cool and funky groove for young jazz players with its catchy melody and solo opportunities for trumpet, trombone or saxophones. The solos can be played as written or improvised with the included chord symbols. With the emphasis on full ensemble and sectional playing, this piece is a nice performance and teaching vehicle in a popular style. It's also playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. An "esky" is an Australian term for cooler, so put this one in your cooler for a fun and enjoyable adventure! 10910525 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .E 45.00 4 Return of the Pink Flamingo—Dean Soren- son. The party starts here with this driving rock tune that features bluesy syncopated lines! It's a perfect opener or closer. The open solo section has solos for anyone with the included scale sheets or the written solos in all the parts, and there are some cool rhythm breaks following the solo section. The flexible scoring will sound full and complete with as few as nine players on up to expanded jazz ensemble instrumentation. Dynamic and fun! 10910563 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .E 48.00 4 Running with Scissors—Gordon Goodwin. Running with Scissors is a very hip, funky groove chart played around 168 bpm. It's loaded with classic Gordon Goodwin flair, plus sample solos are provided for C instruments, E-flat alto or bari saxes, B-flat tenor, B-flat trumpet, and trombone. It begins as a nice, quiet funk groove, develops, and has great textural variation between the rhythm section and horns. The lead trumpet range is to written high C with an optional D. Included is an auxiliary percussion part and optional parts for flute and vibes. More accessible than many Gordon Goodwin charts, your band and its audiences will totally enjoy this one. Highly recommended! 10867429 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . MA 52.00 H September—arr. Mark Taylor. Here's the classic funk tune from Earth, Wind & Fire in a terrific arrangement for big band by Mark Taylor. This one includes all your favorite signature horn riffs as well as a solo for tenor sax. 10016127 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 50.00 Seven Nation Army—Jack White/arr. Paul Murtha. Featuring one of the most powerful riffs of the rock era, this hit recorded by The White Stripes in 2003 is arranged here in a hard-hitting version for younger players. No solos are required and the melody is skillfully passed around from section to section. Fully-notated bass lines and piano voicings are included, and it's playable with optional reduced or augmented instrumentations. Lots of fun and highly recommended! 10775172 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .E 40.00 4 Sign Me Up!—Mike Kamuf. This funky original has all the ingredients for your jazz band to succeed. It's an up-tempo rocker with a super melody played at around 132 bpm. There are written or improvised solos for trombone and alto sax and the bass line is one that younger players will enjoy. Additional features include a lead trumpet range to written G on top of the staff, a cool a cappella stop-time section that goes into a big shout chorus, followed by a brief drum solo. Optional parts are included for flute, clarinet and vibes. Sign us up for this highly recommended chart! 10867422 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 48.00 H Sir Duke—Stevie Wonder/arr. Michael Mossman. In 1977 Stevie Wonder was in his prime and Sir Duke was on top of the charts. Michael Philip Mossman takes this familiar hit and adds his own unique touch. The opening features the brass with sax section fills. The middle section goes into a double-time swing and includes a solo for tenor sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum break. All the familiar lines from the original are there too! Suggested solos are included along with scale/ chord sheets in all keys. Highly recommended! 10297508 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 50.00 4 Squiggly—Kris Berg. Squiggly is the ultimate feature for a contemporary guitarist. A quirky funk melody over a blues chord progression makes the perfect funk chart for any festival, contest or concert. The solo space could be for guitar, tenor sax 1, piano and/or bass. There are no woodwind doubles and the lead trumpet range goes to F. Recorded by Kris Berg and The Metroplexity Big Band on Time Management featuring Andy Timmons. 10875721 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . MA 65.00 4 Toe Rings—Robert Skiles/arr. Paul Baker. This is a seriously funky chart that's like a party on staff paper! A funky Prince-like guitar riff sets the groove and the brass section ushers in the melody. There's a lot of back and forth interplay in the ensemble and some fun baritone sax/bass trombone licks as well. Also featured is lots of solo space for tenor sax and trumpet with simple chords to work out on. A drum solo follows the horn (or rhythm section) soloists and that leads to a layered horn section that builds to an ensemble shout chorus. The trumpet range is to written high C. Tension is released by a return to the opening guitar riff, melody recap, and tag ending. This one really cooks and is highly recommended! 10882941 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 50.00 Tweet Fatigue—Gordon Goodwin. Gordon Goodwin wrote this superb chart for a good high school jazz ensemble to be played around 126 bpm with a straight-eighth feel and a rock groove. The saxes start things off a cappella then things heat up in a quirky, but clever Goodwin way. Solo space is provided for a variety of players with separate sample solos provided for C, B-flat, E-flat, and trombone soloists. An auxiliary percussion part plus all the usual optional parts plus vibes are included for augmented instrumentations. Here's your festival chart that's highly recommended! 10756402 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . MA 52.00 Uptown Funk!—arr. Michael Sweeney. From Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, this monster hit is the perfect throwback to a funky R&B style! This arrangement for younger players features modest ranges and repetitive yet authentic-sounding rhythms. This outstanding chart is playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations, and the bass lines and piano voicings are written. No solos are required, just a little attitude! Our highest recommendation! 10522944 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .E 40.00 H Watermelon Man—Herbie Hancock/arr. Mike Kamuf. Oh yeah! This is a crowd pleaser and a band pleaser... a win-win! Fun, funky, hip, groovy — call it what you want, this chart is excellent in every way... and if you have a decent bari player, he or she will really love this one. There are written solos for alto and tenor sax, a stop-time without rhythm section for the saxes, a fantastic interlude section, a monster shout chorus, and some short drum fills... what's not to like!? Very highly recommended! Optional expanded instrumentation. 10071893 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 48.00 4 We, Too—Bret Zvacek. We, Too is a bluesy rocker in the style of the great Thad Jones. This one features great ensemble writing, a burning groove and plenty of solo space. The full ensemble "horns only" sections are a real highlight! Highly recommended! 10882598 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 52.00 H Whiplash—Hank Levy/arr. Erik Morales. Feat- ured in the 2014 movie "Whiplash," depicting the relationship between an ambitious student musician and an abusive, yet respected instructor, this chart is a super-exciting work in 7/4 composed by Hank Levy and arranged by Erik Morales. Don't be intimidated by the meter... it's challenging, but after a few minutes it feels quite natural and the students will totally groove on it. The melody is stated by 2nd trumpet and 1st alto with solo space for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is critical and the rhythm section may want to spend some quality time together. The lead trumpet range is to written D above the staff. This is a unique but very desirable chart to have in your library. You won't regret playing Whiplash! 10068794 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . .
