4e Scenes from the American West—Jack Wilds.
This suite is a musical portrait of three cherished
National Park areas. The first movement is a
short fantasia based on the folk song Rocky
Mountain, the second movement portrays
wonder at the sheer size and scope of the
redwood forest, and the last movement is a fast,
energetic portrayal of ancient pictographs found
at Big Bend National Park.

4e Sirocco—Gary D. Ziek. This sweeping work is
named for the Mediterranean wind that originates
in the Sahara Desert. This phenomenon is
musically brought to life, re-creating the changing
nature of this arid wind. Beginning with a brief
and violent flurry of sound, it then subsides to the
calm of a still, hot desert morning. As the air starts
to move, the desert comes to life with the music
evolving into a 6/8 world-music groove, enhanced
by colorful pulsating percussion effects. Building
and growing in intensity, the raging sandstorm
powers over the landscape to a climactic close.

much of the work. The piece culminates with a
thundering climax, signifying the majesty of snow-
covered mountains shining brightly in the sun.

his prey. Then, abruptly springing to the attack,
the chase is on with the music taking flight. This

Middle Eastern sounds with this work that
combines authentic traditional melodies and

4 By My Side—Andrew Boysen Jr.. The building
blocks for this piece come from the use of a
musical cryptogram. This approach assigns
musical pitches to notes of the alphabet, allowing
the composer to spell words musically. The main
melody outlines the name of the dedicatee of this
work, a high school percussionist and an avid
runner. After the initial chorale-like beginning,
a running theme is presented in a faster tempo;
these two themes then combine for a stirring end
which fades off into the distance.
