BALLADS

4 After the Rain—Larry Neeck. This powerful rock
ballad, with its blues-tinged melodic and harmonic
structure, is a great feature for developing alto
saxophone or trumpet soloists throughout. The
solo part is entirely notated with no improvisation
requirements. Additionally, it features a big, full
sound for the entire ensemble. After the Rain
is the perfect choice for that change-of-pace
moment in any program. All this, and it's playable
with optional reduced instrumentation. Our
highest recommendation!

H Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here
is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad!
The arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and
there are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that
swing in this way. The arrangement suggests
flugelhorns throughout, although trumpets
would work just fine. There is solo space for alto
saxophone and trumpet/flugel. Very nice!

H Angel Eyes—Matt Dennis/arr. Dave Wolpe.
Here is a natural pairing of ballad style with an
exceptional standard as a tenor saxophone
feature. Beautifully arranged, this chart features
lush harmonies, a double-time swing section,
and a nice sax section soli with tenor lead. The
tenor solo is completely notated and does not
require improvisation, although it could be added.
The lead trumpet range is to B above the staff,
and optional parts are included for expanded
instrumentations. Simply gorgeous!

Breathing—Fred Sturm/arr. David Springfield.
One of the last original pieces composed by
the late Fred Sturm, this may be one of the
most beautiful. Sensitively arranged by David
Springfield as a quiet ballad concert piece with
no improvisation, Breathing will serve well on
any concert program as a quiet interlude that
will showcase the gracefulness of your ensemble
and delight those in your audience. Highly
recommended!

H Bridge Over Troubled Water—Paul Simon/arr.
Paul Baker. Paul Simon's soulful rock ballad is set
here at 88 bpm, and as arranged by Paul Baker
is sure to please! The melody is first stated by
trumpet 2 and tenor sax, there are no improvised
solos, and the trumpet 1 range is to written G
on top of the staff. This chart also features great
dynamic contrasts and a satisfying vamp toward
the end. Optional wind and vibes parts are
included for expanded instrumentations. Highly
recommended!
10452102 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 48.00
H A Child Is Born—Thad Jones. Composed and
arranged by Thad Jones, this is an absolutely
gorgeous ballad in 3/4 that is a "must" for any
good jazz library! It's one of the most "tasteful"
jazz charts ever written!

Come Sunday—Duke Ellington/arr. Rick Hirsch.
Oh yeah, a beautiful straight-eighth Ellington
ballad! Come Sunday is played around 84
bpm with gorgeous voicings throughout. There
are suggested or improvised solos for tenor
and trombone, very easy brass ranges, and
all the usual optional parts to include vibes for
expanded instrumentations. Very playable and
very satisfying!

4 Dreamsville—Henry Mancini/arr. John Berry.
From the classic TV show Peter Gunn, Henry
Mancini's iconic ballad is lush and silky. There's
nothing fancy here, just nicely scored harmonies
and melodies for young players. This beautiful
ensemble ballad is a great choice for festivals,
or change-of-pace concert programming, and
it's playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

4 The Evening Sun—Doug Beach & George
Shutack. This beautiful ballad is the perfect
showcase for a budding alto saxophone soloist.
The pensive melody and rich harmony combine
to create a wonderful change-of-pace chart.
While there is an optional short section that may
be improvised, the solo part is entirely written
and no improvisation is required. Playable with
optional reduced or expanded instrumentations,
this is a wonderful feature for both the soloist and
the ensemble!
