Larry Shackley
There were many talented musicians
at the church where I grew up, and they believed in
encouraging and nurturing young people who showed
an interest in church music. I started writing songs
and instrumental pieces in high school, and our choir
director, Dr. Dean Kincaid, encouraged me to write
something for our youth choir. He suggested I try a call
to worship and provided me with some possible scripture texts. The result, a short unison piece called O
Come, Let Us Worship, was used in a worship service,
and I was thrilled to hear the choir and organ singing "my" notes. In my remaining teen years, I wrote a
couple of other shorter pieces and an Easter cantata,
all of which were performed by our youth and adult
choirs. Those experiences and the help of musical
adults at my church made me realize that I could write
a "new song" to bring glory to God.
