Craig Courtney
I began writing sacred choral music out of necessity.
I and my family were living in Salzburg, Austria from
1981 to 1987 and, during that time, we attended
an English-language church. Many of the members
were music students at the Mozarteum where I was
employed. We loved to sing together in English and
often formed impromptu choirs for Christmas and
Easter. I began arranging and composing music for
the choir due to the fact that we couldn't purchase
English-language music in Austria. I had no idea that
I had any ability for composition and had certainly
never planned on trying my hand at it. So, in essence,
I had a test-tube choir that I could "try" my music on
and learn from my successes and failures. I know that
if God had not put me in that place at that time and
in those circumstances, I probably would have never
started down the path that led to my current career.
