The process of discovering my compositional voice actually began when I was
a middle school choir student. I had a fantastic choral
director who introduced us to many types and styles of
choral music. I can remember to this day the excitement that I would have as she would pass out new
chorals for us to begin preparing. Between the summer
of seventh and eighth grade, I decided that I wanted to
become a composer. I taught myself how to write music manuscript by taking hymns from the hymnal and
transcribing them onto manuscript paper. I showed
my choir director, and she gave me texts and poems
to set to melodies. My piano teacher also taught me
how to compose accompaniments for those melodies.
As I matured as a musician, I began to realize that this
desire and passion to compose and create was more
than a middle school activity, but it is truly a gift from
God. In every anthem that I compose, I seek to honor
the Divine Creator in the best way that I possibly can,
for He is ultimately the Giver of the song and our
Master Composer.
