H Autumn Leavesarr. Peter Blair. This is a great
old tune! Except...theres nothing old sounding
about it. Its a medium swing version of a marvelous,
often-played standard that opens with an alto and
trumpet duet and is filled with tight ensemble
punches. The saxes are featured on a chorus and
there is a written or ad lib solo for piano.

experienced groups know that a swing chart by
Bret Zvacek will be both well written and exciting
to play. As this chart demonstrates, he is also adept
at writing charts at the medium easy level. This
sizzling shuffle chart is a great teaching vehicle. This
accessible, melodic blues swinger features nice
ensemble passages, written or improvised solos, and
gets very exciting in the last chorus. Great melody,
great ensemble writing, great chart!

4 ye, Bye Blackbirdarr. Mark Taylor. Arranged
B
in a medium slow Count Basie style, this is a great
chart for teaching ensemble balance and laidback
swing. It includes plenty of tutti ensemble playing,
plus a Basie-like piano solo thats completely written
out. Playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations, its highly recommended!

H C-Jam BluesDuke Ellington/arr. Stitzel. Whether
you know this one as C-Jam Blues or Dukes Place,
you sure will recognize all the great Ellington writing!
Even the most inexperienced bands can do a fine
performance on this jazz classic. The suggested
solos are included in the parts for the entire section,
so you can make it a soli feature if you prefer.
Theres a marvelous ensemble tutti section that
starts softly then builds to the end.

Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn for Frank
Sinatra and the title track from his 1958 album,

ensembles with modest ranges, but with authentic
style. Included is plenty of tutti ensemble playing
along with short solos (or solis) for any sax or trumpet.
A great way to teach swing, its also playable with

l DeepSteve Brown. Feature your drummer with
this original work paying tribute to drummer Danny
DImperio, whose experience is deep as he
played with Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson,
Chuck Mangione, the Vanguard Orchestra and
others. Utilizing a bright bebop feel, this chart
was inspired by Victor Feldmans Seven Steps to
Heaven, as recorded by Miles Davis. Its chocked
full of bebop vocabulary and has a challenging soli
that lays well for the saxophones.

H ont Get Around Much AnymoreDuke
D
Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney. What better way
to introduce the music of Duke Ellington to your
young jazzers than with this wonderfully scored
arrangement by Michael Sweeney! Even at this
easy level, this chart really swings and will sound
great with limited rehearsal time. Your pianist gets
a rare chance to shine as he or she is featured on
the melody while the ensemble answers. Later,
every section gets to play the melody and theres
a written or ad lib solo for any saxophone. The final
section starts softly with saxes alone, then builds
as various layers are added. This bluesy, swinging
chart is playable with as few as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets,
1 trombone, piano and drums, and all solos have
written parts provided. This belongs in every young
jazz curriculum! Highly recommended!

included for alto, tenor, trumpet and trombone,
and the trumpet 1 range is to written E, top space.
Playable with optional reduced and expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

4 Blue MonkThelonious Monk/arr. Mark Taylor.
One of the signature tunes from jazz legend
Thelonious Monk is this quirky and iconic blues!
This great-sounding version for big bands maintains
the medium swing feel and Monk-isms from
the original, but the arrangers own stamp of
originality is exemplified with crafty ensemble
lines, rhythmic twists, and some powerful full
ensemble statements in mixed meters. Solos are
included for tenor, trumpet and drums, along with
marvelous writing for the entire band. Suggested
solos are included along with chord/scale
sheets in all keys. Highly effective!
