This dramatic music is based on an authentic Japanese folk song Mori no Fukuro (The Forest Owl). This pensive and beautiful tune becomes the inspiration for a truly unique arrangement. Textures change mysteriously as a solo violin and solo cello exchange, melodies, followed by 2 solo violins soaring over pizzicato accompaniment. This builds into the final statement of the folk song with an obbligato in the first violins. Highly recommended! 10013227 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 H Loch Lomond—Traditional/arr. Noah Klauss. A folk music classic that is a staple for young players. Recorded by Michigan State University Orchestra on the CD, Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra Volume 1 - Pepper #5973728. 955013 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .45.00 H Scarborough Fair—Traditional/arr. Brian Balmages. The aching emotion in this interpretation of Scarborough Fair is a genuine treat for young string groups. The lyrics of the 16th century (possibly older) ballad relates a heartsick couple proposing impossible tasks to prove unending love to one another. Embodied with simple counter lines, harmonies, and dynamic range, Brian Balmages paints an image of youthful love and its inherent theatrics. Excellent! 10091946 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .40.00 Shaker Hymn—Traditional/arr. John O'Reilly. Based on the hymn "Tis the Gift to be Simple" (used in Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring), this arrangement is a superb vehicle for exploring Early American music and its links to the present. Skillfuly arranged by John O'Reilly, this selection is correlated with Strictly Strings, Book 1, page 34. 2375491 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .46.00 Simple Gifts—Joseph Brackett/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle. Lighthearted and energetic, this arrange- ment of Simple Gifts suggests a dance-like character. With its familiar and captivating tune supported by a gentle but persistent underlying rhythmic motif, students will study balance of sound and staccato and legato bowing styles. 10592167 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .45.00 Soldier's Joy—Traditional/arr. Sandra Dackow. This familiar fiddle tune will be a great way to open or close any concert. Featuring a variety of string techniques, this arrangement showcases all of your players on both the melody and the accompaniment. Correlated with Orchestra Expressions Book 2, this piece will inspire your students to increase their tempo to create an exciting performance! 10872141 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .49.00 Stone Mountain Stomp—Carl Strommen. This one stands out in the "fiddle tune" category. Carl Strommen has managed to take some of the sounds of Southern fiddling and mix them with a Western "Copland-esque" style and make something really special. Another great feature of this one is that the violas and low strings all get a chance at some fiddling. 2472094 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 Variations on an Irish Tune—Brian Balmages. Based on Thomas Moore's famous song The Minstrel Boy, this work uses the full gamut of styles and techniques, from bagpipe drones to lyrical playing and even fiddle music. The work is composed of three variations that run together seamlessly. The first variation presents the entire tune, much more upbeat than it is usually performed. The second, lyrical section is absolutely beautiful and offers an opportunity for working on musicianship and phrasing without overextending the group technically. The final section is fiddle music and takes the audience on a thrill ride that builds to a glorious conclusion. A wonderful piece to showcase your group! 10008688 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 When Johnny Comes Marching Home— Traditional/arr. Sandra Dackow. When Johnny Comes Marching Home was popular with both the Confederate and Union Armies during the American Civil War. Students will love to play this exciting arrangement that remains in first position with strong eighth-note passages and great parts for all. Appearing in the 1800s, it is embraced as traditional folk music by both Ireland and the United States. 10739961 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .49.00 Where the River Shannon Flows—James I. Russell/arr. Brian Balmages. Based on the emotional Irish song, this thoughtful setting paints a picture of a man dreaming of the day he can return home. At times, the piece feels more like a fantasy than an arrangement as the melody weaves through an increasingly complex series of textures and harmonies before returning to the plaintive sounds of the opening. 10877071 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .40.00 Folk & Multicultural Medium & Medium-Advanced Ani Ma'amin—Traditional/arr. John Leavitt. Arranged now for string orchestra, this traditional Hebrew song and its text provided comfort to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, serving as a beacon of hope for the future and for mankind. A powerful musical moment for the concert stage. 10494180 String Orchestra . . . . . . . .M 50.00 Arabian Dreams—Soon Hee Newbold. Feature your top player on this famous American tune! The first time through, the soloist takes the lead accompanied by some pizzicato and the occasional foot stomp. The second time through, first violins play most of the tune along with the soloist. The third and final time through the soloist gets some nice variations on the tune. And, oh yes, the faster the better! 2702541 String Orchestra . . . . . . . .M 48.00 El Relicario: Paso Doble—Traditional/arr. Robert Longfield. One of the most famous and best-loved paso dobles ever written in a setting for string orchestra! Fiery rhythms and sweeping Spanish melodies make this an outstanding change of pace for concert or festival performance. 10756566 String Orchestra . . . . . . . .M 40.00 Fantasia Espanola—Soon Hee Newbold. Soon Hee Newbold explores the world of Spanish music with fiery results! Syncopated rhythms propel the passionate melodies which pass from one section to another, while pizzicato and col legno bowing create castanet accompaniments. There's even a strumming, guitar-like pizzicato effect in both first and second violins. A tango interlude leads to a furious finish. A show-stopper! 2480774 String Orchestra . . . . . . . .M 50.00 Gaelic Trilogy—Traditional/arr. Jim Palmer. Gaelic Trilogy provides the string orchestra with an opportunity to perform three Irish fiddle tunes: Fair-Haired Mary; Neil Gow's Lament and Stray Away Child. All sections, including the basses, get a chance to play beautiful melodies as well as interesting accompaniments. With three distinct styles and tempos, this exciting piece is a great introduction to Irish fiddling. 10738934 String Orchestra . . . . . . . .M 49.00 Hemispheres—Richard Meyer.
