Resmiranda (Wonderful Thing)
Mitchell Covington.
There are numerous settings of
RESMIRANDA in the English choral
tradition—most well known being by Benjamin Britten. This setting
by composer Mitchell Covington combines the English carol text with a
seventeenth century text by Thomas Pestel. Scored for mixed chorus with
piano, the work would be a marvelous addition to your Lessons and Carols,
Epiphany worship, or holiday concert.

Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow
arr. John Leavitt.
A popular Christmas spiritual is adapted with tasteful choral textures, including
call-and-response and interesting inner lines. Nice original music propels the
transitions with shouts of "Halle, Hallelujah" before drawing to a rousing final
statement: "Rise up, shepherd, follow!" An epic arrangement, it also offers a
colorful optional chamber orchestration.

Silent Night
arr. Dan Forrest.
A gentle instrumental introduction sets the stage for this setting of the classic
Christmas carol, continuing under the familiar text with a quiet intensity as it
builds to the strong statement of purpose: "Christ, the Savior, is born." Then it
quietly rests in the strength of that truth. It is scored for SATB divisi voices with
optional available string quartet or orchestra parts.

Sing Glory to the King
David Schmidt.
This joyful and tuneful carol uses 12/8 to its fullest, bouncing between four dotted
quarter notes to six quarters in a measure, and the effect is delightful. Smuggled
into the piece is a touch of What Child Is This which contrasts nicely with the
rhythmic and syncopated nature and contemporary feel of the original music.

Maria Walks Amid the Thorns
Fred Gramann.
The German Advent carol Maria durch ein Dornwald ging
has its origins as a
song which would accompany a pilgrimage. Here, the text is set to an original
melody. With child, Mary walks through a forest, perhaps on the way to visit
Elizabeth. Where Mary passes, the dead thorns miraculously bloom with roses.
Each verse ends with the supplication "Kyrie eleison." Quite fittingly, a soprano
soloist or small ensemble is required.

Masters in This Hall
arr. Mark Hayes.
Mark's interpretation of the wonderful French carol is even more exciting
than the original! Unexpected harmonies, call-and-response chorals, and the
fabulous accompaniment build this setting to new heights. Challenging and
so gloriously festive, this is a tour-de-force for larger groups, community glee
clubs, and adult church choirs.
