ADVENT ANTHEMS
l Joy in the Desert—Pepper Choplin. Prophecy
becomes song in this contemporary anthem based
on passages from the book of Isaiah. Toggling
between a singer-songwriter style and more
traditional choral vernacular, this piece is ideal
for the traditional/transitional church. The text is
a vision of a better world filled with life, peace,
and hope. The use of interesting harmonic twists
throughout the song produces a refreshing timbre
to the sonic landscape. Something wonderfully
different for Advent!

DL Joy of Longing Hearts—Mary McDonald. Mary
McDonald breathes new life into a familiar Advent
text, Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, pairing it
with the tune
NETTLETON. She then adds her own
melody and text in the center of this prayer for Christ
to come. It is equally effective with piano or orchestra.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence—arr. Craig
Courtney. The French hymn
PICARDY is generally
sung at Christmastime, yet the text places Christ
into the context of history, and refers to his coming
as the one who will eventually vanquish the
"powers of hell." Consider this impressive setting
for Christmas and for Lenten services, and even for
the concert hall. Scored for more capable choral
forces and an accomplished pianist.

4L Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence—Chad
Fothergill. A really beautiful introduction establishes
the tone for this glorious congregation/choir setting,
which was the highlight of the 2019 Christmas at
Duke Chapel program. Accompanied by organ and
strings, verses one and four are unison, verse two
is SATB a cappella, and verse three suggests the
congregation in canon. It closes with a brilliant,
thrilling finish.

Light a Little Candle (New Edition)—Joseph
M. Martin. Incorporating the wonderful spiritual,

with everyone. Using familiar candle imagery, the
piece fosters a solid understanding of Advent and
its symbolism.

Light in the Heart of Winter—arr. Lloyd Larson.
This selection pairs the gorgeous Irish melody
SALLY GARDENS with a picturesque text: "The
wind sings a song of longing, as the sky turns cold
and gray. But a Light in the heart of winter will warm
the chill away." A beautiful piano accompaniment
combines with striking harmonic moments in this
memorable Advent anthem.

DL Light of Light—Joel Raney. Designed to support
the lighting of Advent candles, this includes a choral

responsive spoken liturgy with piano underscore,
then a text to be read with the lighting of the candle.

t Little Drop of Heaven—Pepper Choplin. This a
cappella anthem, with its appealing melodic hook
and just a few touches of dissonance, is sure to
enhance your Advent and Christmas worship. The
well-written choral parts are easy to prepare, and

the choir without changing the character of the

Long-Expected Dawn—Karen Marrolli. With
original music and text by Karen Marrolli, this
lovely Advent anthem interweaves the tunes Veni
Emmanuel and Ermuntre dich, mostly in the flute
part. Choir and flute are heard alone in the opening
measures, and with the piano's entrance, the
tempo increases. Very interesting and engaging,
it offers fresh insight into the traditional themes of
darkness, light, despair, and hope.

O Come, Emmanuel—Elaine Hagenberg.
"Colorful" is the best word to describe this original
setting of the traditional Advent text, scored for
choir, piano and cello. Marked "mysterioso" in
triple meter, it is such a creative interpretation
- the effect in performance is truly extraordinary!
Highly recommended!

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel—arr. Teresa
Jennings. This haunting, modal carol is based on
one of the earliest forms of sacred music known
- the chant or plainsong. This unique two-part
arrangement contrasts the rich melody in part 1
with a rhythmic, contemporary counterpoint in part
2. Real magic and a striking effect comes from
a third line played by an alto flute or with a small
group singing the melody on an "ah."

O Come O Come, Emmanuel—John A.
Behnke. A recurring rhythmic motif begins in
the accompaniment and anchors this simple
but creative setting of the tune Veni Emmanuel.
The composer specifies sopranos/tenors on the
upper (treble) staff and altos/basses on the lower
(treble) staff. As a result, its flexible voicing ensures
success with either treble or mixed voices in a
variety of situations, large or small.

4L O Come, O Come Emmanuel—arr. Kyle
Pederson. An original chant-like tune is used for
the opening section, singing the Latin text "Veni,
veni, Rex Gentium." Then the cello takes that
melody as the choir sings the
VENI EMMANUEL
tune with English text. In the final section, both
texts and tunes occur simultaneously, building to
a powerful climax before the piece closes softly,
as it began.

This arrangement is stunning! Scored for SATB
